badbeer (357), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 Review from 2006. Bottled in 2005. Grabbed the wrong year, but I was cool with that considering the ABV.
Dark amber color with an off-white head with decent lacing. Smell was malty, plenty of caramel. Very nice and sweet flavor, seemed much more like a doppelbock, but it was very good nonetheless. Plenty of caramel in the taste, other sweet malts come into play as well. Mouthfeel was heavier than medium bodied, with medium carbonation. Overall, even though it was a year old, it was still very good. I’d buy this again for sure.
PhillyBeer2112 (1800), Orange Park, Florida, USA Jul 1, 2008 Neat, almost pure amber-orange color, with a medium fizzy head. Heavy caramelized malts up front on the nose, also very bready, moreso than any marzen I’ve ever sniffed. Huge heavy caramel malts, sweet, cloying, massive wet sweet finish. Very heavy palate, the least refreshing and drinkable marzen ever! Needs a heavy sharp cheese to counterbalance or something. Ugh. Rising peppery hop bitterness but there’s no semblance of balance. Lingering heat from the alcohol. Guinness4Duff (384), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Jun 27, 2008 Bottle. Nice copper pour with a healthy white head. Strong caramel aroma with some light fruit notes, flavor is more of the same. Caramel up front with tart apples and melons leading the way to a mild bitter finish. Very good. djd07 (316), Houston, Texas, USA Jun 26, 2008 Bottle as shown. Pours a copper amber color with a large frothy off white head that lasts. The aroma is a pungent sweet caramel and light malt with fruit. Good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is a very rich malt with brown sugar and caramel. Leaves a very sweet aftertaste. A good Marzen from Avery. WolfsBlood84 (99), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Jun 24, 2008 22 oz. Bottle (Vintage 2007) - Pours a golden ruby/amberish with nice off-white head. Aroma is very malty, and smells of sweetness, bread, honey, caramel, and slight hops. Taste very malty, caramel, honey, bready, and damn is it sweet Hop bite on the end Really interesting, I’ll buy another bottle to age for a while, but I still can’t believe it’s so sweet for being about a year old.
