Commercial Description:
Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

This really isn’t too bad. Not fantastic by any streatch of the word, but actually quite drinkable. Has some fruitcake and chocolate in the nose, with some dried red fruits in the flavor along with some roasted malts. The downside is that the mouthfeel is quite thin, and has a finish that drops right off the radar, but initially some nice flavors, they just don’t stick around long.

Deep mahogany, big beige head. Chocolately with fig/prune notes. Toasty malts, mild bitterness. I liked this and would certainly drink it again.

500ml bottle. Deep black-brown toffee color. Pungent fruity alcohol aroma, highly reminiscent of Caribbean Stouts. The taste is pungent fruity chocolate as well. A little watery and thin on the palate. Really unimpressive and more or less a gimmick beer.

Bottle from Brad. Deep dark brown color, frothy head. Roasted malt and coffee in the aroma. Creamy, velvety flavor, malty sweet with licorice, cinnamon and coffee. Apple. Warming alcohol. Pleasant stout.
