BlackForestCO (522), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA Feb 29, 2008 Bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin tan head that diminished to a ring. Aroma of light chocolate, roasted malt, leather, and hints of dark fruit. The flavor was pretty similar, with a light chocolate malt leading into a roasty middle with undertones of coffee and fruit (I detected berries, but I may be crazy). Full and smooth, not much alcohol apparent. Sort of simple, a bit sweet, but overall it was a solid imperial stout that I am glad I was lucky enough to try. Thanks Nick. AmEricanbrew (924), Swamp Shreveport, Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Feb 7, 2008 Pitch black with a light brown head. Medium strong smell of mocha-chocolate malts. Smooth oily mouthfeel. Very sweet taste of dark chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Has a chalky flavor on the tongue to finish. Sweet even for an IRS. Not much depth of flavor here, but good in its own right. Alcohol is well hidden. 22406 pineypower (872), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA Jan 13, 2008 Thanks to whoever gave me this one, been sitting in the cellar for a while. Pours out black with a tiny brown head. Aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate and slight oxidation due to the age of this bottle. Flavor is complex with a nice thick mouthfeel. Chocolate, roasted malt slight dark fruits. Warming/alcohol finish. Nice Ughsmash (3004), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jan 8, 2008 Many, many thanks to Jay for getting this beer to my cellar! Poured surprisingly light.. translucent cola brown with just a dusting and loose-bubbled ring when agitated. The aroma picked up caramel upfront with sweetly-roasted chocolates, molasses, and mild oxidation notes behind.. this came across alright, but perhaps lost a little oomph with age. The flavor had more roast to it, with semi-sweet chocolate and caramel at the core.. sticky molasses and vanilla show up on the back-end, leaving a sweet, satisfying finish.. warmth brings out some vinous qualities. Medium-plus bodied and sweet overall on the palate with low carbonation.. rather syrupy at times.. grainy toasted cocoa on the finish.. alcohol showed up well after I finished drinking this and not at all before. This appeared to have lost some carbonation and cohesion with age, but it was still tasty. Angeloregon (1898), Portland, Oregon, USA Jan 7, 2008 Got my hands on a bottle of this one from the now defunct Sindees market in Portland, Oregon. It head up quite well. I’d had one other bottle from my friend David a while back and it too was pretty good. Poured a thick abysmal midnight black. Small wispy tan head. Nose of sweet roasted malts and robust complexity that changed after it warmed a bit. Some alcohol, molasses, peat and chocolate notes as well. Very well crafted. I miss this brewery!
