Commercial Description:
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Pours an opaque brown color with a nice rich brown head. Aroma is bitter cocoa, dark roast, some sweet vanilla, some coffee, a touch of smoke, brown sugar, and some mint. Flavor is cocoa, vanilla, dark roast, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar and a bitter spicy finish.

(bottle - 341 ml) Dark black pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is mild with a very nice cocoa and bitter roasted malt smell and the lightest touch of vanilla. Flavor is rich and smooth. Lots of roasted malts and cocoa at the beginning with a roasted and sweet vanilla middle. Finishes very bitter and bittersweet with a light hint of coffee and cream. Outstanding.

Bottle (thanks to Tweety for sharing this)... Black with a thin, light brown head. Chocolate and vanilla meshed nicely in the aroma with smoked, roasted, cocoa malt character too. Seemed heavier than the tame alcohol percent it contained. Chocolate and smooth malt presence and a touch of coffee-like tones. The vanilla shined through in the end. Really simple, but wonderfully complex at the same time.

11.5oz bottle, labeled Aphrodite. body is black with no color at edges. head is tall and fluffy, dark tan/sienna. aroma is vanilla, chocolate malt, almost like a black & white malt shake. yes, milk chocolate syrup, and marshmallows too. flavor is roasted chocolate malt, some baking chocolate and then vanilla & milk chocolate too. dryish and a little bitter in the finish, with a roasty dry aftertaste. nice profile for a beer that’s only 6.5% ABV. lots of thin lacing all up & down the glass.

Pours a jet black with a minimal head and leaves very sticky lacing.... Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla extract with alcohol... More vanilla aroma than chocolate... Flavors are quite rich, roasty with vanilla again dominating the chocolate and coffee flavors, with notes of smoke... Very much a dessert beer, very complex... Not too thick while still being quite sticky though not that sweet... medium bodied, medium full mouthfeel, not as roasty as expected. somewhat dry finish, and a touch of lingering bitterness... Very outstanding stout, just a bit too much vanilla for me...

Poured dark brown with a nice tan head, some minor lacing. Aroma is really nice mix of vanilla, roasted malt, chocolate. Great stuff. Taste is really nice mix of roasted malt, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, light bitter notes as well. Mouth is full and creamy, full bodied brew. Overall, an awesome beer.

Bottle. Pours a viscous near-black with a low dense tan cap. Intense chocolatey and coffee aromas, faint hints of stewed fruits. sweet, silky, chocolatey palate, with burnt malt bitterness and coffee and dark fruity elements as well. God am I glad I can buy this in Alberta! This will join McAuslen as a permanent member of my fridge stock.
