Commercial Description:
Also known as St.Ambroise Millésimée.

In honour of our tenth anniversary, McAuslan Vintage Ale has been brewed to continue the centuries-old tradition of strong ales and barley wines. Vintage Ale is rich and malty, with a surprisingly well balanced and clean hop finish provided by classic Goldings hops. The ale is unfiltered and derives its orange hue from wheat malt blended with pale and Munich malts. The malts also provide a hints of caramelized fruit reminiscent of a Christmas pudding.
McAuslan Brewing will celebrate each new year by brewing Vintage Ale on our anniversary. As a vintage product, we estimate this ale will remain in good condition for a number of years.
The 2006 edition is down from 9.4% to 9.2%. In 2007 this went to 8%. In 2009 this went to 9.8%.

2007 bottle. poured into snifter. aroma is lots of malt with caramel, some notes of toffee and toast. colour is a gorgeous, foggy deep orange with a small white frothy head. leaves some nice lacing. flavour is rich in malts and caramel, some plum and other dried fruit in there as well. the finish is crisp, and leaves subtle notes of hops lingering around the palate well after you’ve settled your glass down. another great st. ambroise beer, and a more than decent barley wine. great for storing.

20 yr vintage tasted - this may be one of the best beers that I have ever tasted. I’m not sure beer gets much better than this. At only 6.99 a bottle here, it is unbelieveable value compared to some of the other expensive brews out there. It has a superior balance. More beers should be like this. Figuring out how to get the smoothness of this without aging would be the secret of all secrets.

2007 Vintage - Hazy orange with a quickly disappearing head. Light aromas of malt and candied sugar, almost funky. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, low carbonation. Malt is dominant, with notes of peaches, but well balanced by a light herbal bitterness. Maybe one of the less complex vintage from St-Ambroise, but still a very nice example of a british style Barley Wine.

2009 Vintage. Pours deep amber, almost orange, with a large, persistent head. Nose shows lashings of rich sweet malt mixing in with resinous hops, dried pineapple and sultanas. Malt profile includes golden syrup, caramel and bready notes. Some alcohol is noticeable but blends in exceptionally well with the malt. Very rich flavours, with loads more malt showing more bready notes and caramel, before an assertive bitterness enters which, along with some very harsh alcohol, makes for a formidable finish. Very syrupy body, but the carbonation is to lively. The alcohol provides a fair bit of heat on the palate and tongue. I’m guessing the alcohol and carbonation issues would settle with some age.

2007 bottle at Beerbistro in Toronto, consumed on 6 Dec 2009. Chestnut brown with a medium tan head and very fine lacing. Plethora of aromas here, including licorice, peppermint, caramel and honey. Flavors of honey, raisins and cinnamon, nicely complex, with a dry finish. Outstanding body. Delicious, complex and interesting. Would like to store it for a couple of years more.

Bottle. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, sugars, a bit of booze. Flavor the same, very dull, very sweet, lots of residual sugars. Very run of the mill.

2009 bottle. Pours a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma of alcohol, prunes, caramel malt. Flavor of sweet malt, vanilla with a alcoholic finish and some bitterness. Meh, not very complex and a little too boozy. I didn’t really care for this. 5/4/5/3/12 [2.9/5]
