September 15, 2007 At first glance, this is just another of many sandwich/ice cream shops that litter the tourist areas of the Eastern Mediterranean. Artokopos means "bread-cutter" in Greek, and the place specializes in bakery and bread products. However, a glance at Artokopos’ beer cooler reveals that owner, Nikos Trehas, appreciates good beer. The beer cooler is not overly big, but it has 12-15 bottles of very drinkable stuff including a previously unrated offering from Het Anker (Athos). After I ordered an Athos, which apparently doesn’t happen every day, Nikos came over and talked to me and ended up giving me an Athos glass, which you can see on the Athos page. From memory, some of the other brews he had available were a couple of the Chimays, Tripel Karmeleit, of course Mythos, I believe a La Trappe or two and some other harder to find stuff. If you’re in the Plaka, definitely pay this place a visit as my impression is that good beer in Athens is hard to find. |
