24 reviews for Tyler’s Taproom and Restaurant (Durham - American Tobacco Historic District)
| TheBeerGod (97), Newport News, Virginia | | October 16, 2009 Went here after WBF Durham. After a pleasant trip to the Apex Tyler’s, we figured we’d stop here afterward for drinks. What a mistake. We sat outside due to the nice weather. However, our waitress might as well have been at the fest. When we saw her, it was usually accompanied by attitude. We were going to eat here, but I did not and only ordered one drink. Once we caught whiff of what was happening with our service, we generally agreed to walk down to Mellow Mushroom. Some in the group ordered and received their food/drinks. Others didn’t. The real kick in the nuts came when the bills came. Because there were 7 of us, despite the service, they charged 18.6% tip! We could have argued but quickly went to a better place in Mellow Mushroom. Willing to go back for a second chance on a less hectic weekend if in Durham. | | gotohelunc (11), Chapel Hill, North Carolina | | June 19, 2009 I’ve been to Tyler’s many times and have been owing it a rating for a long time. The beer list is the best you will find in Durham, and up with Flying Saucer in Raleigh for the best beer list in the triangle and depending on the day, maybe even better than Saucer. They hit all the craft styles, focus on American but also have a few Belgians and other Europeans. I love how they serve many of the beers in the correct glassware from the brewer and the glasses are always room temperature. The waiters/waitresses don’t always know the beers as well as they should...just depends who you get. The food is a good deal and generally good, but the beer list is certainly the main draw. Awesome building and location in the cool Tobacco District. | | zizzybalubba (34), Elizabeth City, North Carolina | | May 2, 2009 Visited Tyler’s the day before the Raleigh WBF for lunch. Food was excellent. The 50 taps offered on the front wall offered a varied selection to please all beer palates (they even had a mead on tap). The bar was the most organized I have ever seen with the corresponding brewery’s glassware directly below the taps. The bartender knew all of the answers to my questions and knew exactly what they had available. North Carolina has a very good selection of breweries available to them now and this place had quite a lineup including a few limited time selections. If you were interested in building a beer bar this is the prototype. An absolute must from my experience. | | brewski519 (11), Morrisville, North Carolina | | December 31, 2008 I have been to Tylers a few times - always great beer selection and the beers I have had there never disappoint. The food is typical tavern food and some choices are better than others (Fish Tacos and Fried pickles get a big thumbs up) but everything has been pretty good food-wise. Service is hit or miss - a couple of times we have sat outside before a Durham Bulls game and the service was decent but a few weekend nights we went by there and ate inside the service was as slow as can be - I had to ask about our order several times and that is not something I will typically do - I am usually a VERY patient person. Ambiance is pretty cool since this is located in the American Tobacco Historic District. | | DMRz (10), Durham, North Carolina | | October 25, 2008 This is one of the best places in Durham to come with friends and enjoy great, hard to find beer. Service has always been friendly and efficient, and their seasonal rotating taps make each trip there interesting. The restaurant and bar sides each have slightly different draft lists so be sure to stop by both. | | CelticBrew (14), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina | | October 12, 2008 DrBayern, Doboy and I went over between sessions at the WBF. I’ve heard so many great things about this place, so I was looking forward to the experience. Naturally it was crowded, but soon enough we got a table. The service was very slow, the food took forever to come out. Yeah, the beer selections were awesome (had a pint of the Sonoma Farmhouse Hop Stoopid), but my fish and chips were unimpressive. Perhaps another try when it is not busy, until then I can only imagine what it could have been like. | | dkachur (114), Charlottesville, Virginia | | October 5, 2008 Came here between World Beer Festival sessions as well as after the festival.
If you like the industrial vibe, this place is for you.
We ran into lots of servers, who ranged from friendly and attentive to downright incompetent.
Lots of seating indoors and out.
Food was tasty and simple.
Impressive selection of beer, truly living up to the taphouse moniker. Highly recommended. | doboy (8), Morehead City, North Carolina does not count - explanation | | October 5, 2008 Ate there between Swssions of the WBF. Sure it was crowded, but the service was sub par, and the food was below average. Salad came with meal. Burger was overdone and somewhat dry. Never got the water we requested.
Great draft beer selection! Can’t complain there.
Probably wouldn’t go back. Was not impressed. | | barleyPops (58), Quad-Cities, Illinois | | September 25, 2008 a very large place in a great location. I missed the Stone release party by two days, but was still able to get a snifter of the 2006 Double Bastard. ( which was fantastic!!! ) sat outside and was only here long enough to sip a couple of beers on a gorgeous afternoon. nice place. | | emacgee (25), Chapel Hill, North Carolina | | May 18, 2008 Finally tried this place out. I’ll say this much, the location is fantastic. I love what Durham did with this area. Girlfriend and I sat outside next to the river and had a few brews. They’ve got a good selection of brews on tap and in bottle. Lots of Rogue stuff, but thats a story all to itself. The food was good, nothing mind blowing but in my opinion thats not what you should be there for. |
