Visited on a Monday afternoon back in November, they were playing fun oldies rock music upstairs in the big old dining room, and similar downstairs in the dungeony student bar. Didn’t try the food. Taps were interesting enough (mostly Granite and McAuslan and other local brews). Service was friendly, but could also afford to be on a quiet afternoon. Would be interesting to re-visit the basement on a busier night. Extra points for rich historical values.

What can be better than drinking in the basement of a 1834 heritage house in Halifax? Downstairs is where it’s at. The outdoor patio is nice but lacks the special character of the basement. Is dark, cozy, and very English-seeming. Has the Granite array draught, all were fresh when I was there but heard rumors that isn’t always the case. I really enjoyed sipping a few pints of Granite in here even if it was mainly empty.

Good food, real ale, nice building. Not a great selection of beers, but they have Granite on cask and a couple nice McAuslans. My favourite pub to go to for a meal.

It smelled like pee pee when I first walked in, but friendly and knowledgable service, cozy atmosphere, good beer on draught, and pretty good food made up for it.Tried my first draught cider here, not too bad.

I used to hang out here after it opened many moons ago because I lived just down the street. I went back last trip to hlfx to chat with some friends and drink a few beers. Friendly wait staff and patrons .. a nice place to hang and sip a few, especially if you’re located on this end of Barrington.

Between the nicely tart Irish stout, the excellent service, and the split-personality ambiance (quaint old inn upstairs, cozy dive downstairs), this place is a must for any dedicated beer geek visiting Halifax. I didn’t try the food (had just had lunch), but it looked promising and varied. I tried the beer sampler -- all were decent (though the IPA was oddly pallid), and the Irish stout was excellent.

May 2007. Visited with my brother on a cold spring night, the half-mile walk from our motel certainly made us thirsty! This is a beautiful place, inside and out, very inviting and friendly to the eye -- an old stone house, with the pub in the basement, an older crowd for sure than any of the other places we stopped in town over our couple of days there. Loved the small, intimate copper bar. A nice selection of the Granite beers, but the best pint I had on my whole Atlantic trip was a Garrison Brown Ale which was really quite excellent for the style, and something I will look for again when in these parts. All in all, the nicest drinking place I found on my short stay the Atlantic Provinces.

I have never had a bad experience at the Henry House. The beer is always excellent, the food is great, the staff are always cheerful and helpful for the newbies I take. The Henry House is a great destination for a Friday afternoon craft brewed beer with a good book or a chat with a fellow patron. Nice and cozy, warm and inviting. The darkened pub serves outstanding unpasterized ales and stouts made by the Granite brewery which once occupied this building. Hand pulled, cask conditioned ales, rustic furniture, exposed wooden beams and a nice collection of old Canadian beer bottles completes its historical appearance. A great place to drink the hours away. A must stop destination for beer lovers.

September 2006. Back again to one of my favourite drinking holes in Halifax. Nothing much changed really, still just how I like it. This time I tried the food, standard pub grub but still good. August 2005. I was very excited when I found this place. The bar is in an olde English style, I thought I was back in the UK. Down in the cellar its dark and gloomy but that’s what I like in a pub. Its got character. The best part was finding out they had a list of there own decent ales, Yippee I was not restricted to the choice of Keith’s or Labbatt’s etc etc. The beer was in the style of some famous English beers, and they were very good indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Henry House

Rating for the basement pub. Very dark and old looking place. A mix of high bar tables and lower dining tables. Lots of stonework and dark wood let you know you’re in a real pub. Only had some soup, which was quite tasty. Fairly busy for a weekday afternoon. Service was pretty good, considering the bartender was doing everything. Several Granite beers on hand pumps with a bunch of bottles as well. This place has character... if in Halifax, you need to have a drink here.
