12 reviews for Gomer’s Midtown
| aaronphazel (10), Missouri | | August 19, 2009 Pretty good place. Very hit and miss. If your in the midtown area this is your best bet. | | CanIHave4Beers (54), Des Moines, Iowa | | May 21, 2009 It’s a pretty all right place, don’t let the way it looks on the outside keep you from going in. You’ll be quick to learn that the siding falling off the bulding is just a part of that Gomers charm. Plenty of good beer way in the back, pretty disorganized but the guy working there both times I’ve been in has been very nice and as helpful as he can be. Prices are fair and sometimes they’ve got good sales (or at least this is what I’ve observed the two times I’ve been in) | | heemer77 (171), Savannah, Missouri | | May 15, 2009 Pretty nice selection with fair prices. I was able to find a few new goodies here. I was happy to see that the beer seems to be at least a little tucked away from major light sources. Not great looking, but that isn’t why you visit a beer store. Certainly worth a stop if in the downtown area, but did not seem to have as much as the south side KC stores. | | theisti (114), Leawood, Kansas | | February 11, 2008 [ Updated May 15, 2009 ] Stopped by, midday Thursday. Selection is less than Lukas KC or Royal 103rd (as of Feb 2008) though it still is fairly representative of what is locally available. Well above average selection for a beer store. Maybe more convenient for folks traveling to town compared to the places down south. One drawback is no mix a six offered. Service was good the day I was in, though Mark (beer manager) was not in. They helped me locate a beer that wasn’t on the floor yet. As mentioned by others, this is not a clean store - inside or out. | | HomeBrewHawk (15), De Soto, Kansas | | February 4, 2008 This isn’t a big shop, so there is not as large of a selection as you will find in other stores. That being said they carry a nice offering of Micros, Belgians and other European brews. Some of the harder to find beers seem to last longer here than other stores. I have found some gems here, that were long gone other places.
Service is top notch. Mark often posts availability of items at that other beer site. Prices tend to be a little higher than some stores, but if you are in the Plaza/Midtown area, this is a solid choice. | drawde (4), San Francisco, California does not count - explanation | | August 16, 2007 Caveat--I’m a non-local hophead, so I’m only looking for IPAs and double IPAs. On August 15, 2007, I bought Schlafly’s Export IPA (which was lame) and Great Divide Hercules Double IPA (which was bomber). There was another double IPA but I didn’t recognize it and it doesn’t hit the radar on ratebeer. They had labels (indicating they sometimes carry) some of the Bells IPAs and doubles, which got me excited, but they were out. Friendly, somewhat knowledgable staff. Overall maybe the best place in KC? dunno, only place I’ve been so far and certainly better than a corner store. | | sethdude (17), St. Louis, Missouri | | September 11, 2005 All in all a fairly good beer store. Building is graffiti-tagged, floor is filthy, and lighting is horrid, but that’s really the only bad things I can say about this place. Selection was fair, with local(ish) beers from Boulevard, Schlafly, Pony Express, and much to my suprise, O’Fallon. I was able to find a few new things. I also was able to find a jar of Boulevard Pale Ale Mustard, which is the best mustard EVER. | seamus77 (6), kansas city, Missouri does not count - explanation | | July 22, 2005 tetnus shots anyone? now, I have been informed by a former beer salesman that gomer’s actually sees their grunge as a plus...whatever. it wouldn’t kill them to organize a few things, and maybe dust or sweep once a month. the only thing gomer’s really has going for it is that they undercut everyone else pricewise. they have a decent (by KC standards) selection but nothing that makes this a must-see store. service has never been great (do they ever come out from behind the counter?) except when an attractive friend of mine worked there. bottom line: go there to save $0.50 here and there per single bottle, find a good Belgian brew, and wash your hands after you leave. | | Indra (51), Prairie Village, Kansas | | June 28, 2005 In the Midtown/Westport area of Kansas City, this is the best bottle shop by a pretty wide margin. Stock is usually somewhat limited, so if you see something unusual or special that you like, you’d better grab it while you can. Selection is typically less interesting than the Gomer’s on Holmes, however. | | ElGaucho (146), Minneapolis, Minnesota | | June 21, 2005 After reading afatty’s comment that it was the best selection he found in KC, I expected so much more. This is a small store, with a clear emphasis on good beer, but without the shelf space to have stand out selection. They do not split up 6-packs, but owner Mark at least was willing to mix 3 different Schlafly six-packs so that I could at least try 3 different brews without having to buy a whole 6-pack on it. He also pulled out some obscure O’Fallon brews from the back for me. I also picked up a bottle of the JW Lees 2001 vintage. Other than that, his selection of Schlafly was much more limited than at Royal Liquor and virtually everything else I could get back at home. I went trying to pick up singles from local brewers and frankly came away disappointed. I realize that for some stores shelf space is an issue, and that beer geeks may not be the bread and butter clientele, but I have to believe it wouldn’t be that difficult to always have 1 six-pack’s worth of selected beers displayed as singles. Other stores do it and are very successful with it. |
