27 reviews for Sun Devil Liquors
| rustychiles (10), Mesa, Arizona | | October 5, 2009 Sun Devil is the best beer store in Mesa bar none. I’ve been shopping there for years and their selection is on par with their sister store Tops in Tempe, but since they are in Mesa some of the more sought after brews spend a little more time on their shelves, which means more time to buy. The owner Laurie is very personable, and the rest of the employees Chris, AJ, etc treat their locals well. They have a basement with a small tasting room with a couple of taps and a cooler full of various beers, wines, etc if you feel like hanging out that they recently expanded to include 200% more room, couches, swank furniture, flat panel TV’s and occasional live entertainment. I hope that this catches on because they’ve been putting a lot into it lately and it’s really a nice quiet contemplative place to have a beer or 2. If I had 1 complaint about anything here it would be the organization of their beers, and the temperature at which the non cold storage beers are stored. In past years in summer months the store has been quite warm; however this past summer I didn’t notice any excessive temps. Another nice thing about sun devils basement is that they have a temperature and humidity controlled cellar where you can store your beer and wine. In Arizona you can’t exactly cellar stuff in most houses like they do there, and the rates seem reasonable. | azbeerdood (2), , does not count - explanation | | July 13, 2009 Love the place! Aesthetically a bit worn but hey, went for the unusual offerings. While not promoted as well as it should, they do have a small wine/beer bar in the basement. Limited hours but worth the journey. | | hollypocket (10), Arizona | | June 30, 2009 [ Updated July 1, 2009 ] the selection is immense. looks like they are doing renovations to make it look nicer. the wine bar now has an art galley, which i think is pretty cool! thanks Sun Devil, you are awesome | | bhensonb (287), Woodland, California | | October 15, 2008 Everything everyone said (that’s good) and more. Lots and lots of beer. Lots I have never had. Don’t miss this place. It’s a sister store of Top’s Liquor in nearby Tempe, but Sun Devil is one heck of a lot more organized, and arguably a lot less dusty. | | nbutler11 (69), Phoenix, Arizona | | August 12, 2008 A little out of the way, but completely worth the drive into Mesa. Nothing too rare, but an amazing selection all the same. The only down side is that around half of the inventory has a centimeter of dust on top of it from neglect and the atmosphere almost warrants wearing a bullett proof vest. | | kyzr (18), Belgrade, Montana | | March 15, 2008 Great selection, been hitting this place for years. Dark and dusty at times, can even find some old stuff. Where else can you get Bert Grant’s IPA still, how long have they been closed down? But really, they do have some great stuff here. Wish I had this selection back in MT. | | GeneralGao (220), Iowa City, Iowa | | March 2, 2008 Dodgy looking place a bit off the beaten path. The lighting is low, so you know that they either care about their beer or are trying to do their part to use less electricity. The selection is very good and very similar to that at Tops Liquors in Tempe. You are free to assemble mixed sixes at will. Well worth a visit, but I preferred Tops just slightly. | | cbkschubert (33), Cochise Co., Arizona | | February 17, 2008 This place is fantastic! It’s not pretty to look at, but what a great selection of beer. I think it might even be better than Plaza Liquors. The prices are reasonable and the staff was friendly enough. A great place to find beer. They wouldn’t let me use thier bathroom though. Hence, the 8 for Service. | | SuperDave70 (14), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona | | February 4, 2008 When you walk in this place, your first instinct may be to turn around and walk out. But, take a few minutes to stroll around the somewhat disorganized dusty shelves and haphazardly placed displays and you will be rewarded. There are boxes of empty six-pack holers placed around the beer areas, so feel free to grab a couple and fill them with whatever you can find. And don’t worry about breaking up another six-pack to get what you want, it is not a problem here. Can’t find exactly what you are looking for? Just ask, most of the employees know the exact location of everything in the store, and seem to have sampled a great majority of them. Looking for a keg? They have a great selection. And they are more than happy to roll out to your car and help load it. This place is truly amazing! | | Taverner (77), San Ramon, California | | January 15, 2008 They have such a great selection, and you can mix and match. I’ve never seen a place like this, even in California. |
