| afireinside96 (29), Mountville, Pennsylvania | | August 2, 2009 Though it looks rather nondescript on the outside the beers within this place are a beer lovers paradise. Most of the taps focused on local breweries with a few Belgians. The bartender was very knowledgeable and described every beer to us after we ordered it. Prices were decent, maybe slightly lower than other Philly bars. The decor was mostly ho-hum except for the mens room. It has an amazing mosaic covering every inch of it with several famous beer quotes laid out within. Worth a revisit, hopefully on a Friday the Firkenteenth. | | HereForTheBeer (12), Brattleboro, Vermont | | March 17, 2009 We are big fans of Grey’s Lodge. We have been going there for many years, we started going there because the second floor was nonsmoking (now it is all nonsmoking). The food is good. I love the that the draft beer selection focuses on primarily local PA microbrews. I totally love Wednesday night Quizzo. Be sure to say hi to Frank the Tank if you go! | Damico (4), Norristown, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | February 18, 2009 This place is awesome. I think my first of three Friday the Firkenteenths indicates how wonderful I feel this place truly is. We had 20 cask condinitioned ales to choose from, of which I tried 15. Before that I got to try the Legacy Brown-Eyed Girl which was so delicious on hand pump. The food is phenomenal! The red and yellow (Russet and sweet potato) fried were an unbelievable basket and the wings were great too. The variety of beers was excellent on top of the cask-conditioned, and I can’t wait to visit this place on a normal evening. | tomasher (1), New Jersey does not count - explanation | | October 10, 2008 A great, casual atmosphere with high quality brews, a knowledgeable staff, and phenomenal crab fries. | | kmweaver (113), Sebastopol, California | | July 28, 2008 Really relaxed atmosphere (at least on a Saturday late-afternoon) in the middle of the ghetto. Sunlit, dusty bar with dartboards in the back and an entirely chill, local-filled atmosphere. Lots of available street parking. Friendly, attentive waitstaff (at least until the shift switched over), and loads of cool stuff on tap, including the Flying Fish Bourbon Barrel Dubbel & Brooklyn Keller Helles. They seem to have a decent selection of current local and widely distributed bottles, though nothing exceedingly rare or with much age behind it. The taps are where this place excels. Growler fills are available, as are 8 oz pours, and both are reasonably cheap. | roan22 (4), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | May 23, 2008 I love Grey Lodge because they are located in a neighborhood that isn’t downtown, the people are different every time, and the experience here is always rich. You can save on parking since its free! I have been going to GLP since 2005.and know the owners, and some of the bartenders, very well, Scoats, Pat, John, Frank, Doozer, Teddy, Billy etc. Although Kathy is no longer there, the newer bartenders are alright too.
GLP recently moved the downstairs beer chalkboard list to the opposite wall, which still confuses me at times lol...
Pat has improved the menu over the last two years to add dinner specials on weekends, and new appetizers/small meals include a turkey burger, bacon chicken wrap, grilled shrimp with bacon etc. The fries are still fresh cut and great. The beer is great too. Scoats gets everything new and seasonal, cuz he’s cool like that! His website has been top notch since I’ve known him...he runs his own server fo chrisss sakes....Scoats is such a nice guy and really cares about your experience at his bar. | | RblWthACoz (23), Brooklyn, New York | | November 15, 2007 This just seems to be the quintissential corner joint for Philly. If you just peeked in without knowing a thing about the place, you might think it was a total dive. If you paid attention just enough, you would know that this is a place to stop at. I came mid afternoon, so service was good as there wasn’t much else going on. I felt the selection was well thought out and covered a decent amount of space on the globe that is the world of beer. There were several bottles in the cooler as well that are worth trying (and several that are worth passing on). I had the Thai mussels and thought they were extremely good. The fries were very good as well. The only problem was the portion was so huge and I was eating them myself. So I couldn’t hurry and get them all down when they were hot and super fresh. If I were to come back, I would specifically go back for the mussels. I can see how this place would get insane on a busy night. But having any chance to visit would be worth it. | | chronictonic (27), Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania | | September 29, 2007 It’s a bit of a drive for us, but we try to get here a couple times per year. We’re definitely not locals, but we’ve never met unfriendly locals here as some other people commented. My one complaint is that no matter how often Scoat’s updates the beer list on the web site, it never seems to match what is on tap. Not sure if a lot of his "good" beers he gets are in sixtels or what, but it can be disapointing to make the drive an have them be out of what you wanted. Friday the Firkenteenths are a madhouse here - go early! | | JB175 (43), Bucks County, Pennsylvania | | September 23, 2006 Nice local place in NE Philly. Honestly, there’s not much going on in this area. I didn’t grow up in Philly, so the sentimental nonsense about the neighborhoods in this part of the city seems silly to me. Nevertheless, the selection and rotation of beers at this place is great. Not too many bottles, but about 10 or so rotating taps and some cask poured beer make this one a good selecton. They don’t just have good local picks either - you can find some very rare DIIPAs and other strong ales, as well as some nice special edition brews. Nice staff and a "small pub" atmosphere. A bit smoky inside, even if no one is smoking at the time. Food is OK, but nothing to write home about. Still, this place is by far the best in the area for BEER, and thats why its being rated here in the first place! | | xproudfoot (37), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania | | March 4, 2006 [ Updated April 15, 2006 ] Well, the place is a huge sausage party for one. Second, the bottles were not so extensive. A lot of space was taken up by bud, busch, etc. They carried Pangaea which, what was dogfish thinking with that one, and why use up space to carry it. I didn’t really find the beers I didn’t recognize on tap to be all that wonderful. One of the patrons was rather rude to another patron because they were not ordering unusual beer. So what? If they’re gonna sell it, don’t give a hard time to someone who wants to drink it. I might have been better off getting a guinness than some of those beers. Unusual is not always good. The menu, while expanded from tomato pie, is just ok, too spicy to go along with beer tasting. The service was screwed up. I’ll be hesitant to make the trek back. The patrons looked at anyone not from the neighborhood as weirdoes (Hey, we’re just from a few blocks away, ok? and we have girlfriends, so what?) REVISIT April 2006. Worse beer selectionthan before. Still haven’t had an excellent beer here. Food edible but mediocre as before. The one positive is that the service was much better, friendly, helpful. However, this place is completely inessential and does not belong on the beer tour. It’s better than the average bar, but that’s not saying anything much. |
