| darn1207 (32), Tallahassee, Florida | | December 17, 2009 One of the strangest and most memorable brewery tours I’ve been on. We called a month before we went on our pacific n.w. trip to see if they did tours and what the hours were. The "they" in this case would be Alan - the owner and, for the most part, sole employee. Alan was like a little mad scientist who concocts wonderful elaborate beers all by himself in a rundown looking warehouse (and presumably transported there by the old vw van pictured). He was very generous with his time - gave us the tour and several samples. A cool experience for sure. | | boFNjackson (57), Portland, Oregon | | October 22, 2009 The best brewery in Portland, one of the best in the nation, even world. Alan is hospitable and always makes you feel welcome. This place is insane during any dock sales or open houses. But he’ll give you a private tour if you call in advance. Keep doing what your doing Alan, Portland is proud to have you. | | KyotoLefty (132), Kyoto, Japan | | September 12, 2009 Ambiance is great in a fun way. Alan was a great host, informative and generous. We got to try 8 beers on tap, three of which are quite rare. A fabulous time and a must do if you can. Buy up any brews you find here. Make and appointment. Some of the best beers around. | | fidel (53), Livermore, California | | August 24, 2009 Alan was very kind. Tons of barrels as you come in. We tasted 6-8 beers from tap as he gave us a short tour of the small place and answered our questions. Bottles and T-shirts for purchase. Great brew from a great guy. | | CheersMate1 (34), Atlanta, Georgia | | August 11, 2009 Ah...finally. I was able to meet Alan. What a nice man. In a way he is talkative, but also in a way he is reserved. Slightly hard to find. A very interesting experience given the owner gives the tour, and pours you some great beers. Alan even cracked open a 25 and 26 year-old Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale! Also, we brought some Georiga beers for Alan which he appreciated. Had Fred from the wood and bourbon barrel Fred, and the Flanders experiment brew. All were nice. Again, I am not used to this considering it was a very intimate tour. Small brewery but has a unique touch. When you first walk in you are hit by barrels stacked to the ceiling. The brewery is not huge, but nice. Alan was awesome the brewery is awesome, and this was an awesome experience. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | July 25, 2009 After reading the laudative reviews, I figured this place was an absolute must. It kinda was as we had the rare chance to try Matt and Greg with description from Master Sprints himself. The place is basically a pilgrimage, extremely hard to find in an ugly industrial remote part of town. Once inside, you need to squeeze yourself through the hundred or so barrels loaded with elixir. What pulled you here is the beer and Alan was kind enough to offer us free samples of the 5-6 beers he had available on that day. Sorry, no Dave available. It was a nice experience which I’m glad I did, but I was not totally thrown to the floor even though I consider HOTD my favourite brewery in the USA. | | JoeTheYounger (20), California | | July 9, 2009 Called to setup same day appointment. Went with my Dad and Brother. It was a little tricky to find, but my GPS guided me there. Alan was sitting in the warehouse reading a newspaper waiting for us to arrive. He gave us a personal tour and let us try about 5 different brews on tap. The last one he let us try was Matt, which is one of the best beers I have had. The aroma was simply amazing and the taste was unbelievable. He was very cool. I ended up taking about six bottles with me to go. I have never had such a one-on-one personal experience from the owner of a brewery. He even let me get a picture with him. If you live in the area, this is a must visit. Just make sure you call ahead. | | sealfriend (18), , New Mexico | | December 19, 2008 Stood outside for a long time on a cold November morning but they made us breakfast! How nice!
| | ajm (163), Los Angeles, California | | November 29, 2008 I wouldn’t call it a must-stop unless you’re feeling Meccaic. But it’s certainly even more personable than AleSmith, though not as laboratoryish. I put in a food rating because they made us breakfast on Cherry Adam day! | | kmweaver (113), Sebastopol, California | | November 18, 2008 Alan was good enough to make time to visit with my wife and I on a Tuesday afternoon (election day, and in the midst of a fourteen hour brewing session). Located in a large warehouse area on the wrong side of the tracks, we spent about five minutes trying to figure out how to get inside. Lots of HOTD staples on tap, entirely free, including Greg and early bottles of Cherry Adam from the Wood. Alan was a very kind and gracious host, if a bit busy. Really enjoyable stop, and a chance to see a highly successful commercial brewer who still does pretty much everything himself, and masterfully. Pretty much the greatest collection of beers and cellarables anywhere. |
