| JCB (35), Durham, North Carolina | | November 4, 2009 Stopped off here after a long haul, and was pleasantly surprised by the spacious, well-lighted, and - especially - majestically well-stocked store. Not that I expected slim pickings, based on the reviews I’d read, but I’m saying it exceeded expectations. Picked up some Captain Lawrence and Ithaca goodies, and wish I could have packed more. Suffice it to say that all major US micros are represented, as well as a comprehensive selection of regionals. Really good Belgian selection too, with plenty Cantillon. Plus, I went next door to a sweet joint called Crews (mods, it’s back open - unretire it!) and had a great convo with Matt the manager of Half Time. Awesome, and I will assuredly be back. | | njmoons (14), New Jersey | | September 21, 2009 Awesome, Simply Awesome
That said, why is it so awesome. Easy if I was to open a beer store I would just copy this one.
The huge store only has beer, a great start. It had aisles of beer. The first I went through had all American Micros, the second had all Belgian on one side and German’s on the other, the third had 4 or 5 other countries, another aisle had all seasonals.
Ok that was getting boring. They had kegs tapped for growlers, as variety of inexpensive glasswhere, blah, blah, blah.
My son is in college in Poughkeepsie, so each time I go up I will make a stop to restock my fridge with beers I can’t find anywhere near my home.
If your in the areas, I would suggest you check it out. | | agl108 (26), Manayunk, Pennsylvania | | January 5, 2009 Stopped here on my way north to Lake Placid. Very impressive selection, although perhaps I’m a bit spoiled being from PA. As previously mentioned, this place is just aisle upon aisle of glorious beer. Notable domestic micro absences were Bell’s and Founders’ beers. Really nothing new that I was able to find that I couldn’t at my hometown stop (The Beeryard). I was able to procure a long anticipated YuleSmith. However, let me say that being able to purchase singles is a huge bonus. There were also roughly 12 beers available for growler take-out service although none of those brews were particularly enticing or exceedingly rare. Staff was thankfully not overbearing but more than willing to help another customer with a growler when called upon. Spent ~$88 and didn’t get any free glassware, FWIW. Prices were a bit steep overall. | | j12601 (41), Poughkeepsie, New York | | October 11, 2008 It’s rare that I walk into Half-Time and leave with anything less than a full cart. And yes, that’s even when I stop in just to pick up a 6 pack. There are typically about 12 beers on tap, some of which are quite rare, and never make a showing in a bottle.
Selection of micros is the best I’ve ever come across, though being rather greedy, there are always a few more that I would like to see.
Staff is knowledgeable and helpful, but unobtrusive and laid back enough that they pretty much leave you alone unless you look lost, or go ask them about things. | rds (3), does not count - explanation | | September 11, 2008 First visit today and I will surely be back soon despite the 50 mile drive. I could spend an hour wandering around this immaculate, well-lit place without handling the same brand twice. Very professionally run, yet friendly store. By the bottle or pack, the selection is impressive. If you are in the area, you owe it to yourself to stop by. | | blklab2007 (10), Connecticut | | April 26, 2008 [ Updated June 14, 2008 ] took a drive up after hearing so much about the place. walked in and wow there is quite a bit of beer. got a cart and started browsing. loved the singles of anything in the store and quickly had a loaded cart. found a couple of sweet clearance beers and they comped me two glasses with the purchase. the store is certainly well organized and i thought the selection was great. as someone else noted all the blinds were open and the sunlight was streaming in which i thought strange as well. | | yobdoog (92), Woodridge NY, New York | | February 4, 2008 I live and have lived about an hour away form this mecca for beer lovers. The staff is very friendly and the managers generally know the beer they are selling. The website stays pretty up to date as far as draft list and they tend to have a variety on tap at all times. The bottle selection also changes often especially because nothing stays around too long. I love being able to buy singles of anything you want, that is key for me and one reason I love this place so much. If you are looking for variety or looking to boost your ratings and try new brews this is the place. They also have a descent glassware and growler selection and always have some vintage stuff behind the register. Great place to shop if you are passing by, live near by or live even a few hours away it is worth the trip. | mribm (1), Hurley, New York does not count - explanation | | February 1, 2008 This place never ceases to amaze me with their vast selection of beers, both in bottles and cans and on tap. This is the first place I have rated, so I’m not sure what the ambiance should be for a beer store. It is clean, well organized and well stocked with over 1,000 different varieties. The people are friendly and the stock is fresh. My only complaint is the price. I thought their prices would drop as they got more customers, however that never transpired. | TopherDrinks (1), Poughkeepsie , New York does not count - explanation | | January 27, 2008 Worked here for the summer. I also stumbled across this without knowing, and I’ve lived in this town my whole life! Any questions should be directed towards Matt, Corey, or Justin. Tap selection is good, and I love the free glass with every $100 spent (very easy to do). | Drink4Satan (4), Bristol, Rhode Island does not count - explanation | | January 23, 2008 Found out about this place because a few college buddies of mine work there. The selection is great, but they do not carry a few major micros that I would like to see there in the future, but I think that is due to distribution limitations. The staff is knowledgable and passionate about beer and are willing to help you with suggestions. The owner sometimes demands that the blinds be open during business hours, which is incredibly stupid, so the manager will usually override this insanely idiotic move. The tap selection is always changing and stays fun and interesting. Beers you would never expect to see on tap often are at Half Time. Whenever I’m in NY I make sure to stop in.
There is a nice cigar selection up front to boot. Also cool is the free glass you recieve with each hundred dollars you spend. I will consistently walk out with two or more glasses. |
