| carruthm (26), Seattle, Washington | | December 11, 2009 Can be impossible to find a seat on weekend nights, but a great place to hang if you do. Beer list doesn’t change much but tap list is cheap and priced well to bottleshops. | scenroot2 (2), , Washington does not count - explanation | | July 19, 2009 A little hidden Belgian bar in plain site. No big flashy sign out front ... just some steamed up windows.
Great chill place to hang out and grab a great Belgian brew at very reasonable prices. $1-2 less than other bars around the area. They specialize in Belgian brews as well as some local NW stuff. Very decent selection, wonderful atmosphere... no blaring music (no music at all actually), games to play, nice ppl.
| | bvc (18), Kenmore, Washington | | July 14, 2009 Great little ’dive’ place that is all about the beer. Not a huge tap list or bottle selection, but what they do have is way above average and most likely a surprise or two. Usually the tap list leans more toward the Belgian side. No food, single bathroom that is awkward, smells kind of musty and dank inside, pretty dark inside, and the hours can be a little difficult. All that being said, I love the Monk and don’t make it up there as much as I should. | | Poperinge (120), Cowtown, Alberta | | July 12, 2009 [ Updated August 2, 2009 ] Not easy to find even with a GPS, don’t know if I would want to hang out here in the that unit heater looks like a fire hazard and I am sure the CO2 content would be scary. Now I am done my bitching a great booze can, with board games,a great selection on tap and will I go again yes but not in the winter | | BrewDad (239), Olympia, Washington | | June 23, 2009 On a quick trip up to Seattle a friend and I stopped by this Seattle landmark for Beer Geeks. I had heard for quite some time I need to stop in and check this place out. The sign is hidden behind a tree and once you have found it and found a place to park your almost there. You walk in and you find a Belgian beer bar that was an old bar that just was filled with character. There where two huge chalk boards one with the tap list. The other was filled with every can or bottle they where selling. There where about 20 different tap and about 75-100 awesome Belgian/Strong ales on the list. Beers that I have never heard of nor seen and I have seen quite a few. I had some of the best Belgian beers I have ever had. The place was filled and it was a Tuesday night. Now they do not have food so if you need anything you need to bring it in yourself. This was a great stop and I must say I am glad I finally made it to this Seattle Beer Geek landmark. You have to say you have been to the Stumbling Monk. | | SuzyGreenberg (25), Seattle, Washington | | May 21, 2009 Ah, the monk....the skunky aroma, filthy skylight, confusing bathroom, wobbly tables, carved up tables, no food; in other words, everything you want in a dive bar!! except this one has a killer draft list of belgians and small, high-end cooler of bottles; they will have something on draft you can’t find anywhere else in town and special belgians throughout the year; prices are very reasonable for what you get; i prefer this place the most on a rainy afternoon curled up with a nice belgian strong and a good book or as a late night stop to fill that urge for stinky gueuze | | ¾ (599), Colorado | | May 18, 2009 Epic beer bar. Belgian focused. Character ingrained in every table and chair. Sorta pleasing in it’s simpleness, not trying too hard in a neighborhood where everyone is trying too hard. Firkin of lambic, awesome. Orval and Adambier on the menu, yes. Couple of local Belgian-style taps, couple of regional, couple of national. Had a blast. | | mabel (134), Toronto, Ontario | | September 15, 2008 Visited late on a super-quiet Saturday evening back in February. It was so dark inside, looking at it across the street, I thought it was closed and almost walked away, but further investigation proved to find an open door and darkness an asset inside. Small and dark and nooky, it seemed a bit of a let-down for taps after hearing much about their selection, then I looked in the fridges and conceded to the hype: many cool Belgians inside. Maybe it was the beer talkin’ but... well, it really didn’t do much for me, so I had me a Dick’s Grand and stumbled my way out. I would like to find my way there again some day. | | theisti (114), Leawood, Kansas | | September 10, 2008 [ Updated May 15, 2009 ] Visited late afternoon on August 20th. This is a small, comfortable bar with a great tap (I had Russian River Damnation) and bottle selection (I had Ice Harbor Sternwheeler Stout). The bartender was very nice, and we had a great conversation about their selection, and what they were doing with the bar. I can imagine this place gets full really fast, but it was nice and relaxed during the off hours. Fairly easy to get to from downtown Seattle, longer walk or right on major bus line. | | ajm (163), Los Angeles, California | | July 3, 2008 [ Updated August 14, 2008 ] They keep good stuff, but good stuff one can get anywhere. Maybe I should give them another shot. Very dark beatnik atmosphere. The most Seattle place I go in Seattle. |
