| branspra (14), Arlington, Virginia | | October 14, 2009 October 2, 2009. This is the best beer bar in Washington DC, hands down. The beer selection is fantastic, as there are many beers you simply cannot get on the east coast that the owners get via roadtrips. Food is spectacular and overall I spent less than $100 eating dinner, drinking great beer, and charming my girlfriend along the way. This is a "can’t miss" bar in the DC area and I highly recommend visiting it often! | | jeffc666 (86), Fairfax, Virginia | | August 23, 2009 Downstairs has a better ambiance but it does not open until 5pm so be aware. Generally I loathe G’town, but this place is enough to get me to go back. A direct bus from the Rosslyn Metro to the front door step of the Paradiso is an added incentive. I give them a top score for selection since they truck stuff in on their own (thank you quirky DC alcohol laws), notably Three Floyds. The pizza, while decent, is overpriced and not nearly all that it is cracked up to be. Draft selection is awesome and they have lots and lots of bottles. Well worth a stop. | mpersinger (1), , California does not count - explanation | | July 19, 2009 Tried half dozen world-class beers on draft that were new to me (Belgian and domestic, plus one from Japan), at happy hour (half price), with an understanding and knowledgeable staff (and okay pizza).
Thanks Mad Fermentationalist for recommendation) | surffisher (2), Raleigh, North Carolina does not count - explanation | | February 1, 2009 I ate and had a couple beers at the bar downstairs at the Georgetown location. Has a casual, inviting, if somewhat bright, vibe. Draught selection was only fair (based on my personal preferences) when I was there, but at least the draught list was accurate and the selections varied. Service at the bar was excellent - very attentive and knowledgeable. My server also made a point to find the best deal for me on the pizza toppings that I ordered (rather than just charge me for a pizza with the toppings separately, we found a similar pizza that was cheaper and did some topping substitutions). I also appreciated that the beer menus were very descriptive. The pizza by the way was delicious. Prices, esp for beer, were a bit steep, but not obscene. Definitely a cool place overall. | | SamGamgee (83), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California | | January 23, 2009 Nice rotation draught selection that you can keep an eye on on their website. Proper glassware is used in most cases, and bartenders generally know what they are serving. They actually have three floyds stuff, which is a rarity, allong with a quality mix of crafts from all over the country, top tier Belgians, maybe a random British ale, and one beer served from cask. Nice, cozy, and intimate feel at the downstairs bar where most of the beer is. The only real drawback so far has been the price. Everything on tap is quite expensive, even for the city. Bottles have a bit of range, but make the Brickskeller look pretty well priced in comparison. The key, as nuplastikk notes, is the happy hour. Everything on tap is half off, so that ridiculous nine dollar eight ounce tulip of strong Belgian beer is now a steal. As long as you heed this advice (or have a bit more cash than me) this place is pretty sweet. | | nuplastikk (20), Madison, Wisconsin | | January 21, 2009 This is the hot spot for drafts in DC if you ask me. The happy hour is a must hit, where all beers are half price, even the top notch stuff. Half pizzas and apps are also on special during the happy hour. Bells and Three Floyds are regulars, and they stay on top of the Belgian and US Strong beer scene as well. The draft list on their website stays pretty up to date too! | | harpsm (10), Maryland | | December 21, 2008 Come for the beer, skip the pizza. Ambiance is pleasant in the upstairs dining room and the cozy downstairs bar which features a fireplace. Though not huge, the draft beer list is eclectic and impressive. There is also a huge list of bottles. Bartenders know their stuff and are willing to help you choose the right beer. Prices are a bit high, but what else would you expect in the middle of Georgetown? As for the pizza, I was not at all impressed. Bland menu, bland execution, and high prices are not a good combo. This place gets crowded and doesnt take reservations, so avoid weekend evenings if you can. A friend tells me the Dupont Circle location has better pizza, but a worse beer list. | | Travlr (41), Washington, Washington DC | | November 26, 2008 Best pizza I’ve had in DC. Nice selection of well-chosen American beers and strong representation of Belgian, Dutch, Swiss and French breweries. Beer manager Greg is very knowledgeable, and the staff is generous with off-menu selections. Do not miss this place if you visit DC. | | JCB (35), Durham, North Carolina | | October 4, 2008 Having also visited the Dupont location (great pizza, lame beer selection), I finally made my way through the awful hordes of Georgetown to this excellent establishment. Rustic woody furnishings and space above, a nice cozy cellar below for the serious taps. Earthen feel combines with the wood, making it feel like eternal autumn. Didn’t have anything other than some bread, so I’ll refrain from commenting on the food. Great bartender, helpful, witty, not intrusive. Extensive bottle list gives a fine range of Belgians and US micros in particular, but pays particular attention to seasonals and locals as well: Legacy, Brewers Art, and Troegs, along with Bells, Weyerbacher, Southern Tier, etc. I tried Allagash Black on cask (YUM) along with Victory Festbier. Excellent place, and is giving the Brick a serious run for its money. | | BigBang (13), Indiana | | September 15, 2008 Really impressive place. Pizza was very good. Not much of a tap selection (at least upstairs - downstairs was closed for an event) but bottle menu is extensive. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Place is welcoming and I would gladly visit again. Prices are not the greatest but I don’t expect much value in Georgetown. |
