102 reviews for The Brickskeller
| Brewman63 (25), , | | November 21, 2009 Stopped in here a couple of times while vacationing in DC over the weekend. Luckily it was within a short walking distance of where we stayed. This place has great ambiance. It’s located in the basement where all us "skeller-dwellers" belong. The beer selection is fantastic. It helped me eliminate a couple of brews that have been on my "haven’t found it anywhere yet" list. The only drawback was some of the beers I wanted to sample where temporarily out of stock. That can happen from time-to-time. The bartender is a walking encyclopedia of beer knowledge. Sit at the bar and talk to her about any beer they have and she’ll probably be able to give you some kind of intelligible answer. We only had appetizers while we were there and they were okay, nothing special. But let’s face it - you don’t come here for the food. | GreatStelle (1), Chico, California does not count - explanation | | November 14, 2009 If you want to try new beers this is the place. Larger selection than any place I’ve ever been. That includes warehouse liquor stores | | yinzerbeernut (11), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | September 25, 2009 I believe this is clearly a case of setting my expectation high and then not delivering. Living in Pittsburgh, I was in Washington for business and sought out The Brickskeller. My expectation was high from the massive beer list! I was even prepared...I went with a list of 10 beers that were new to me and couldn’t easily get in Pittsburgh. I got my first hit on beer number 7, NOT GOOD! I would recommend a database for the inventory. Then we can actually see how many beers they do have. The atmosphere was disappointing as well. Overall just an average bar with an above average beer list. | Fulmonte21 (3), , does not count - explanation | | September 11, 2009 NOT IMPRESSED! I was there last weekend for the first time and the food was not good, but I went there for beer, not food. They didn’t have the first 4 beers that we ordered and half the taps were dry! If you’re known for beer, you should have the beer! Also, they advertise a bunch of souvenirs on their website, but were out of almost everything. WE asked for a tee shirt and they didn’t have ANY men’s sizes. How does that happen? | Mephistefales (1), does not count - explanation | | September 5, 2009 Very knowledgeable waitstaff. Astounding selection. Terrible food (but that’s not why you go). Saw a mouse on first visit. Don’t sit in the lowest level. Sat in upper floor next time and it was a much better experience. | | nickd717 (22), Palo Alto, California | | August 4, 2009 Decent place. Went on Saturday night with a bunch of people the night before my friend’s wedding. Only about 10 taps, but the bottle list probably weighs in in the quadruple figures. Of course I’ve heard they don’t always HAVE half of what’s on the list, but it’s still impressive. Atmosphere is pretty cool, like a brick cellar but decently lit with dart boards and lots of tables. Prices are reasonable in general but some bottles run a bit steep.
Food is pretty average, but hey, it’s food, and they serve it late.
Since they don’t always have everything on the list, make sure to have second and third choices in mind. In case you don’t, something like this may happen......You: "I’ll have the (insert beer here)." Server: "Oh sorry, we’re out of that. What else would you like?" You: "Oh damn...let me think..." Friend: "Come on, just order one!" You: "No! This isn’t happening! Ok, I’ll just point to one randomly. Here goes...I’ll have the...Natural Light!" Server: "Sure thing." You: "Wait, no. NOOOOOO!!!! What have I done? I just ordered Natty Light at a bar with 1000 beers on the menu! Why, God, why have you forsaken me? My life is ruined! WHYYYYY???" NOTE: They actually do have Natty Light on the menu, so this could happen to you. | | ben4321 (42), Rockville, Maryland | | August 4, 2009 Some how I went about 4 years between trips to the Brickskeller, despite the fact that I live 20 minutes away! Not sure how that happened, but whatever. This place has a great bottle menu, I noticed they have about 15 taps now, which was way more then they had a few years ago.
They are well known for having more stuff on their menu then they actually have in stock, but it is a pretty exciting menu regardless. Definitely one of the better beer spots in DC. Especially from a pure volume of offerings standpoint. | maxwellboltzma (7), Maryland does not count - explanation | | July 31, 2009 Varied selection. Expect them to be out of at least your first 2 picks in beer. Food is tasty but not inventive and the service is eh.
Worth going to.
| | WeeHeavySD (102), San Diego (Hillcrest), California | | July 28, 2009 Ok so this is weird, I would have been positive I’d have reviewed this place before. Been a bunch of times. The beer list is either hit or miss. For the new beer geek, this could be great (though prices are starting to become ridiculous). | | Travlr (41), Washington, Washington DC | | July 25, 2009 Interesting interior, but a bit scruffy. Nice staff. Extensive beer list, but out of almost everything, so you either have to order 3 beers and hope they have one, or just describe what you like and see what they bring you. Decent food. |
