20 reviews for 3 Sons Dogs and Suds
| RHeastings (20), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | November 21, 2009 Stopped here with some friends who live in the area and are regulars. The selection is very very good. A nice combination of good British/European names, hard-to-find Continental stuff, and craft stuff that is both common in the the area, as well as less so. They also serve some basic pub food, but this wasn’t really why I was there. While the selection is really good, the prices can hit you pretty hard. They are definitely not the sort of rip off that the Sharp Edge is (in the city of Pittsburgh), but they are a bit high. However, given the fact that many of the beers are relatively strong and rare, the prices aren’t outlandish. Overall, a nice refreshing change to the soulless cesspit that is Wexford, PA; and certainly worth stopping by. | | Cybercat (42), Georgia | | July 8, 2009 When I was in Pittsburgh I visited only one beer store - and what a store it is! I don’t know how it compares to other bottle shops in the Pittsburgh area, but I am sure that it stacks up well. They have a HUGE selection of craft brews, many of which are available only in select areas. I stocked up on a lot of brews that I can’t find in Georgia.
I like the store’s rugged, unpretentious ambiance. The staff are friendly and helpful and glad to help you find the kind of beers you like. Best of all, you can "mix a six" if you want to take home a variety of beers. They have a side business of fast food, but I didn’t have anything to eat. A good place to visit if ever you find yourself in or near Pittsburgh. | Sonicdescent (5), Donora, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | February 13, 2009 This was a hell of a trek for me but it was worth it. Prices are a bit high but it is probably the best and most well kept selection on this side of the state. Service was very friendly as well. Check this place out if you are around. | | MrChopin (19), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | January 17, 2009 Kind of felt and looked like a mix between Subway and a Grocery store. The guy working was paying nice attention to people as they browsed the selection. A pretty decent selection here, some rarer bombers from Lagunitas, Stone, Southern Tier and the like that I haven’t seen elsewhere in Pgh. Weyerbacher, Stoudts, Troegs, Brooklyn, and the like in 12 oz. A little lacking in "foreign" stuff. Mixed 6ers based on a color-coded prices, which essentially boils down to $12-20 per 6er. A lot of lagers and swill by the single as well, for all you tickers. I didn’t try the food. No more expensive than most places in Pittsburgh. Most of their stuff can be found elsewhere in Pgh, but I’ll go back for the unique bombers. | | KornDogg (20), Lancaster, Pennsylvania | | October 9, 2008 Nice place, my buddy introduced me to it... neatly organized, prices are labeled, good selection... like others said it is far cheaper then Sharp Edge... would highly recommend stoppin by here... other then this place I would recommend THE BEER STORE in moon, across from Robert Morris Univ. if you want cheap prices at the cost of a little bit smaller of a selection... | Foam (7), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | July 14, 2008 Apparently this place was opened by someone related to the D’z 6 packs places ....or someone who got nudged out of that deal anyway .... A nice selection but very high prices being that it’s in whitewash Wexford ( a mcmansion-y suburb ) Still, better than no joint like this in the area ... I try to take a look anytime i’m up there ... | | MrBunn (53), Western, Pennsylvania | | February 16, 2008 [ Updated December 14, 2008 ] Stopped in today after hearing much about the place. It had some nice finds... I went home with Bigfoot, Ten Fidy and Gordon, Big A (Smuttynose) and some others I’d been meaning to try. There were some Belgians, a nice selection of micros and the like... but prices were high as everywhere I’ve been in the Pittsburgh area. I walked with a six pack and a bomber and dropped almost $30. Yowch! Discount prices on sixers mean that you will pay $11-13 for regular offerings and much more for special releases. | DragonsHead (6), Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | February 5, 2008 Great selection. First time there in December. I was very suprised at the prices. Usually, beer is more expensive in this area. Only regret is that it’s in Allegheney County. | dpjuart (2), Indiana, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | December 28, 2007 Nice bottle selection. Mix and Match sixers, convenient labeling system for pricing. Lots of US Micros and imports. Decent Belgian selection. Staff seemed to know their shizzy, though I had little interaction with them. Prices are a bit better than D’s, but a more limited selection. Worth a stop. | | f351c4v (77), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania | | January 6, 2007 Nice little shop in the Wexford Flats plaza. There’s a small food counter that serves hot dogs to accomodate the sale of beer. PA has such archaic laws relating to the sale of beer (among other things), but this is nether the time nor the place... anyway, selection was decent, mostly micros, but there was also a nice Belgian selection. Fantome was a highlight, accompanied by the other usual suspects (Chimay, Global Beer, etc.) Other highlights included Lagunitas and Stone bombers for ~$6, Victory 750’s, and a good showing of German/UK offerings. It’s a great shop by local standards, but in the current climate, no PA bottle store will ever be able to compete with one from a non-monopolized state (ahem, Vintage Estates in Boardman OH, anyone...) |
