Only managed to get here the once, but that was enough. The bar staff I found to be efficient but miserable, more interested in chatting away on his mobile. still there was a good selection of beers, once again nothing truly surprising and prices on the steepish side I felt. This is worth the visit as it is close enough to the centre of town but it is well down the pecking order of Gent pubs.

Since this pub changed ownership, a lot of the ambiance is gone. As Edgar pointed out, there is now a more modern approach to everything, with modern music and young waitors attracting a different kind of crowd. These new waitors don’t seem to know anything about the beer list, either.
Still, the menu is extensive, they have surprising things on tap, and the whole cellar feeling is something that is nearly unique in the region. It’s just a pity that now it feels a tad more like a nuclear shelter than a medieval dungeon.
Go there during the day (if you have trouble finding the Hopduvel), and save the Waterhuis for the night.

Can’t say I was surprised that the Westvleteren wasn’t available. Solid beer list but nothing too rare in there, apart from the exclusive house Blonde made at Van Steenberge (which is nothing special). The house Bruin is a rebadge of Bornem Dubbel. I liked the cosy ambience of the place and the service was fine. Covenient and central, I’d always pop in if in Gent.

No food served. The ambiance is dark and romantic with too much smoke. Westvleteren was on the menu but they were out. I found a few new beers here.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Run-of-the-mill list of perhaps 150 beers and ho-hum service. Ambiance is ok and well located near the end of the church / belfry strip. Prefer others.

About 140 beers from a safe, but quality-conscious list. Service wasn’t overwhelmig, but the ambiance is nice, situated just across from the St Jacob’s Church. Cosy interior on three levels. Expensive beer, though.

Used to be a gem. Changed owners recently, which is a pity. Comfortable and cosy benches in the cellar were traded for ordinary wooden tables, and what used to be only classical music is nondecript and annoying blurrb now. Staff certainly not as hospitable or knowledgeable. Still good place to visit, but could be much better. Beerlist is fine.

We went there in the early afternoon, so it was quite calm. It"s quite cosy due to the wooden interior. A good selection, but no hidden treasures.

This used to be a great place, but now they changed ownership and it just isn’t as cosy as before. The staff is different and still friendly, but it is less knowledgeable.
It still has the same selection in beer which is good.

Best ambiance ever, a very cosy place, especially the cellar. Great service, pitty it closes at 02h. Great selection, possibly the best in Ghent. They don’t have real food but do have beersnacks (cheese etc), tapas (warm and cold) and that’s all I need with my beer.
