Much like Total Wine, these are big box stores, packed to the brim with alcohol. Know nothing staff, great selection and prices.

I didn’t even realize you could review stores here, but I’m glad as it gives me the opportunity to rave about my favorite! I used to do my shopping at BevMo but why bother now since Beach Front (which is NOT on a beach front btw...it’s right off the 5 FW) carries virtually everything I want. Beach Front has every fine Belgium ale you’ve ever heard of save the #1 rated here...the one you have to go to the Abbey in Belgium to get (which I did last year ...still have a bottle.) Lately I’ve been laying off the Belgiums since I discovered how fine the Russian River brews are. Pliny the Elder is simply the most delicious ale I’ve ever tasted! And Beach Front has two full rows of it along with Blind Pig and all the other Russian River favorites, Tonight I returned from Beach Front with several Pliny’s and a bottle of Russian’s Consecration. (Wow....my first sour. I’m diggin’ it!). Beach Front has all of the great Stone ales as well. If you’re a fan of fine ale and you live anywhere near San Clemente, this is where you’ll find it. On top of that, the owners are super friendly and helpful. And....should I say it? The owners daughter, who is often behind the counter, is stunningly beautiful and just as sweet as she can be. Need I say more?? Go to Beach Front and prepared to be VERY pleasantly surprised.

Santa Monica Blvd store. Good selection of foreign brews and west coast micros. Saw some of Alesmith’s big ones in there, as well as Stone, Alaskan, Ballast Point, and more. The atmosphere feels like shopping at Costco, which is kind of novel for a liquor store. One objection: due to the lack of rare and uncommon beers, it is possible that BevMo doesn’t exhibit enough of a discriminating eye when buying from distributors. For instance, if you were to go in there looking for a specific handful of brews from Cali brewers in the area, you would be hard pressed to consistently find any of them here.

Van Nuys location. Big store, plenty of macros and non-Knowledgable staff. The guy working up front didn’t know what Cassis was when an older gentleman walked in (I had to describe what it was to a detailed point where another employee understood what it was). Selection is pretty basic. No small singles, but plenty of 750s. Some beers that are somewhat hard to get in other LA beer stores: Rodenbach Grand Cru, Alaskan Brewing beers, Tom Hardy, Maui Brewing. I was on a budget, so I only grabbed a 2007 bottle of Alaskan Smoked Porter. Will probably return to pick up some Maui Coconut Porter and Anchor Small Beer (which I haven’t had yet, or seen in stores before).

Very big store, went in on a visit to Cali. Excellent selection of micros. Picked up some Stone, Moylans, and very happily found 2 beermans barleywine. Very good service as well, there was always someone around to answer questions and get a box for us. Very nice store.

BevMo seems to have a fairly decent selection of craft brews and world beers. They also offer beer tastings every Friday afternoon at most stores. Some locations do have larger beer selections than others. (They also have a huge selection of wine, with wine tastings on Saturdays.) The staff is well traind and quite knowlegeable, with some employees that specialize in beer, wine and spirits. You can ask all kinds of bar related questions... they always seem to find the right answers. Pretty good for a mini-warehouse style store. Food is limited to a good selection of bar snacks, cheeses and several types of caviar. Great selection of barware and accessories. [The Laguna Niguel store that has been open for over a year is not listed on RateBeer’s list but is listed on the bevmo.com website.]

Newish location in Laguna Niguel on Greenfield road, at the 73 and 5 freeways. Decent selection of local micros on the shelf. Cooler selection is less than I"ve seen at other BevMo’s, but decent. A good beer shop, but nothing amazing. Worth a visit, but don’t go out of your way for it.

Huge selection. Big store with lots of room. I went twice when visiting Disneyland. I didn’t even notice a fridge. The staff leaves you alone while you shop. Good website as well. Just can’t ship back to Canada.

For a chain store they do a pretty good job. They dont sell singles of the 12 oz. brews which sucks. Service is iffy and varies greatly store to store. As for food they do sell a nice selection of cheese but thats about it besides chips, nuts etc.
