20 reviews for Karl Strauss Brewing Company, Downtown
| theisti (114), Leawood, Kansas | | July 6, 2009 Visited with the family, the first night of my vacation to San Diego. They had about 8-10 beers on tap, nice broad menu that included good options for the kids. The layout of the restaurant is a little cramped, with the bar area taking one half of the space, and the dining area the other. I can imagine when full, this place is quite hard to get around in. Service was good, offered some opinions, was attentive. My food and beer were both good, but not great. This reminds me of Wynkoop in Denver, or 75th Street in Kansas City - places that are more or less local institutions that have faded or been eclipsed. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | June 30, 2009 The black and pale wood interior of this brewpub gives it a rather dark, fitting atmosphere. I felt comfortable for a meal, but would not necessarily want to spend the evening there. Patrons are a mix of professionals finishing their day and sports fan. The staff is active, friendly and reacts quickly when you’re out of fuel. I focused on their 2 IPAs, which were good, if a bit below this area of the world’s standards. I had a more than fair burger while Catherine loved her Mac’ and Cheesse. | | padrefan98 (34), (San Diego) Santee, California | | October 2, 2008 Very business like during lunch. The brews are ok. Not my favorite. The food is decent but pricey. Not very much parking available so other then lunch during work which is walking distance I won’t be able to visti at dinner. | | Beese (50), Watford, England | | September 6, 2008 Pretty good downtown establishment, not that large, but a good selection of their own beers, which I found to be pretty good for the most part, their Saison was particularly tasty. The service was good the first time I went, but pretty slow the second time around, not awful though. The food was on the expensive side, but quite good overall, not a rip-off by any means. Good place, I’d definitely go back. | | RunDWP (11), San Jose, California | | August 13, 2008 [ Updated August 14, 2008 ] Urban loft-type ambiance. Food was good, not great. Service a bit spotty, but my server tried hard. House beers were solid to pretty good. I plan to go there again next time I’m in town. | | suddenlyissoon (13), Chattanooga, Tennessee | | May 2, 2008 A bit cramped but it was a good place to get a beer. I tried their sampler and didn’t really find a beer I disliked. Then I got a pint of the Red Trolley Ale and fell in love. It was very, very good. Might have been my favorite beer of the entire trip. The Stargazer, for an IPA and from a guy who doesn’t really care for them, was very, very good as well. I really wish I could find this stuff in Tennessee | | jeremytoni (53), Swedesboro, New Jersey | | January 20, 2008 Staff is friendly and helpful. 10 beers on tap and good food. | | Snojerk321 (38), San Diego, California | | December 8, 2007 [ Updated January 30, 2009 ] Have had some good times @ this place. Went there for a beer when we were cruising around down town before my buddies bachelor party. | | bhensonb (287), Woodland, California | | July 26, 2007 Hit it during happy hour on a Wednesday. Very helpful staff. The beers tend towards sweet rather than bitter, but that’s Herr Strauss’ German background. The Santa Fe Beef Quesadilla was quite good. Nine beers on tap. | | Tmoney99 (254), Cincinnati, Ohio | | February 11, 2007 Easy to find location in downtown San Diego. Clean inside with wood bar and clean bar and tables. Brewing operations behind glass behind bar. Freindly service with good knowledge of selection of 9 to 10 taps. All beers average drinkable with good selection of styles. Good food menu and the calamari was a good portion and very good flavor. I enjoyed the visit. |
