RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
CANNERY WINE CELLAR IS IN THE PROCESS OF RELOCATING. IT HAS BEEN REPLACED AT ITS FORMER LOCATION BY "OAKVILLE GROCERY", WHICH CURRENTLY HAS A RELATIVELY POOR BEER SELECTION.
Situated in the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf, the Cannery Wine Cellar is a perfect stop for beer hunters visiting San Francisco from out of town. They stock a stunning array of 500+ bottles of beer, specializing in imported beers from over 30 countries. Some of the more well-known beers I’ve found here include Zywiec Porter, Berliner Weiss, La Trappe Quad, Petrus Tripel, Samichlaus, and Unibroue Raftman. They also stock many obscure beers. If you’re looking for something new, you will most likely find it here. Their Northern California beer selection, however, is somewhat lacking. The staff is enthusiastic about beer but not very knowledgeable. Given the tourist-laden locale, the prices at the Cannery Wine Cellar are quite high.
While in the neighborhood, consider stopping at Frjtz in nearby Ghirardelli Square for frjtz (try the pesto/mayo dip!) and a Duvel. Jack’s at the Cannery, a 110-tap bar on the same block as the Cannery Wine Cellar, is also worthy of a visit.

| Davecooks (43), Bay Area, California | | June 23, 2008 This place is long gone, Oakville Grocery is gone now too. | | bitter (93), Henderson, Nevada | | April 10, 2006 back in the day this place kicked ass, i think it was called jacks? upstairs downstairs hundreds of beers on tap. funk band and rock. old building awesome atmosphere. sounds like its either gone or moving or somthing. | | willblake (54), Long Branch, New Jersey | | June 23, 2005 What a strange store. In one corner, a wall of gimmick hot sauces. In another corner, sea-gull poop hats and t-shirts. In yet another corner, maybe more scotch and bourbon than I’ve ever seen in an independent liquor store. Crazy racks and bins of 50ml liquor minis (airplane bottles). And then a six foot tall by 12 foot wide wall of beer. Some obscure stuff and most of it is organized by country or region. I’ve gotten some good finds here like mags and 12ozers of Anchor Christmas from various years. There is a surprisingly wide variety of central/eastern European macro type stuff as well as examples from the rest of the world. As others have said, storage is an issue so I’ve made a point of digging out bottles from the back of the shelves. I also picked up a bunch of Alaskan Smoked Porter last trip. Later that day I went to Whole Foods and bought the same beer for $2 a bottle less. I’ve never run into any staff there besides the folks behind the counter. This is mostly a place to buy tourist t-shirts and the like; however, if you have an SO not into beer s/he might at least be able to stay busy while you peruse the selection looking for a gem (like the Vapeur bottles I grabbed last go around). | | MullMan (28), Bloomfield, New Jersey | | June 19, 2005 all the rare bottles are kind of shelved into a big wall, and be careful because it’s exposed to a lot of light. also it’s kind of wierd that this place is more like a souvenier shop, but hey, you’re in fisherman’s wharf! you’re either there because you’re a tourist or you’re there because your family friends are in town and being tourists. do go to fritz, though, there are only a few beers but cooler DJs and a ".be" kind of vibe (that’s belgium dot com). | | ericnixon (57), Lenox, Massachusetts | | June 14, 2005 Wow, tons of beers fron lots of different countries...uh, and that’s about it. | | highlandlad (35), Sydney, Australia | | March 14, 2005 Visiting from Australia, this place felt like Beer Heaven. Saw beers there I had no chance of ever finding down under. No doubt, locals would be less impressed. Highly recommended for international visitors. | allphoto (9), Oakland, California does not count | | November 22, 2004 Good place to come to for singles, the big problem being that many of the bottles have been around for a while. Eithre in their warehouse, or the shelves, never saw so many dusty bottles of beer | | duff (42), Sydney, Australia, England | | October 15, 2004 Not bad, this was a really good selection especially after coming from beer hell(Australia), but as someone else mentions they don’t really specialise in anything, and there is not a lot of rare beers, especially when compared to other beer stores in the US. | nja (6), San Francisco, California does not count | | May 12, 2004 A wide variety of beers from all over the world. Problems are: not a lot of depth in any one area, a lot of the beers that are available are poor (e.g., Corona and Pacifico represent Mexico), and worst, the beers are old. Many were a year or more past their enjoy by date. | | lunaticharness (19), Roseville, Michigan | | March 1, 2004 loud and bustling people due to the fact its at the wharf, long lines usually and no baskets, lots of countries are represented and i did find a bottle of Raftman there... | View Page : 1 2
