| Doggythedog (19), Split, Croatia | | August 5, 2008 As ogi said, an impressive beer list (their black n/a was interesting) and a typical country tavern look. The tables were just waiting for 4 old men to drink beer and play some card game on them. They seemed to be quite enthusiastic about the blind tasting, and handled that ok. The pieces of brown bread with butter and cheese were nice but I really can’t rate food based on that. The only real minus is a lack of a proper toilet in men’s restrooms. A must visit when in the area! | | pivnizub (216), Porúří, Germany | | July 27, 2008 Typical czech country tavern with a fine selection of small brewers. A real nice place ! | | ogivlado (94), Zagreb, Croatia | | July 23, 2008 It looks like typical country tavern from the middle of last century. In my opinion, when blind tastes are not hold here, most of the guests play cards. Impressive beer list and overall nice place. | | thewolf (99), Kolding, Denmark | | July 15, 2008 Now here was a place that had everything under control. Despite a very complicated rating system, the arranged blind tasting was swift and well executed. The rooms were cozy and inviting - as was the staff. Impressive with that many beers on tap. | | gnoff (80), Göteborg, Sweden | | July 8, 2008 Nice place though didnt see much of the surroundsings and did not eat. Good service though. Big selection of beers when we visited, not sure if it’s regular or was special for us. | | ChristianScheffel (40), Odense, Denmark | | July 4, 2008 We had an excellent tasting session at the RBESG here. Quick and efficient friendly service. Excellent selection of beer. Well lit rooms with simple decorations and a nice beer garden. | | mullet (118), Melbourne, Australia | | November 16, 2007 [ Updated January 14, 2008 ] Well there aren’t many places like this in the Czech Republic - probably only Pivovarsky Klub or Pivni Galerie are comparable, but neither of those have this many taps. It’s a relatively non-descript pub in a rather plain regional town, so there’s not much chance of people going there by mistake. I guess they realise this because it seems like the whole place is predicated to beer nuts - well, so far as I could figure out at least. The young bar guy was full of tips (don’t drink 10% after 12% - we didn’t listen) and they have folders with newspaper clippings and articles about beer. The interior really reminded me of a Belgian country café like Rare Vos, Heeren van Liederkerke or that place that’s kinda between Oudenaarde and Gent - dammit what’s its name? It’s an alliteration, something about ducks or something. Anyway... the place looks like a country pub. How quaint. Food options are somewhat limited but I ate utopenec and didn’t get sick. Of the beers we had on the day, the Platan 12% kvasnicový, Poutnik 12% kvasnicový and Kout 10% were the winners. Pretty awesome place, shame it’s in the middle of nowhere (but here and Modra Hvezda are easily done in a day trip via public transport from Plzeň). | | Quack-Duck (55), Bodensee, Germany | | June 10, 2007 I visited Modry Abbe on a Thursday in June. Many interesting beers on tap, from Kout na Sumave, Chodovar and Platan. They even had Platan unfiltered krouzkovany lezak on tap. Very friendly owner, with whom I had a chat. Klatovy is a beautiful town and well worth a visit, so if you’re there, Modry Abbe is a must, and very easy to find, only a few minutes walk from the town square.
If you bring your own bottles, you can take some fresh beer home. | | motelpogo (17), Plzen, Czech Republic | | October 24, 2006 this is the sort of pub i wish existed in pilsen. visited on a sunday afternoon and it was quite busy. was amazed to find a dozen or so tap beers from a variety of smaller local brewers and no pu or gambrinus. they had a couple of unfiltered beers that i hadn’t seen before. brewers included platan, chodovar, kout na sumave, pardubice, strakonice and pelhrimov. they said the tap beers rotate regularly which is very unusual for a czech pub. and they also specialised in rezane beers - 50% dark and 50% pale - a few were on the menu. and it’s not some swanky shiny pub but an old-fashioned czech hostinec. a must-visit. only 2 blocks walk from the square. klatovy is about an hour by train or a half hour drive south of pilsen. i’m sure i’ll be heading there again very soon |
