Cool place, though I felt putting a bit of cash into upgrading the overall area could be useful. I got a bit of a dreary feeling. Amazingly when I was there all the kellers with the best beers were open, ie. Lowenbrau and St. Georgen. Very much enjoyed sitting outside and enjoying these beers, though not a place I want to spend a whole night as the atmosphere, even on a Saturday, was not overly lively.

A fine place in - full of fine places - Franconia; great opportunity to sample many different good franconian brews on the spot. Can get very busy, dusty and dirty during the Annafest, not the best period to pay a visit there, IMHO!

A magical environment indeed and certainly worthy of a destination, especially during the Annafest. It is a sheer delight to be in the woods and be able to do a pub crawl while peering into the storage cellars dug into the hills. It’s a very romantic place, even during the Annafest. Might be the only place like this in the world!

Went during Annafest, so everything was open. Great setting - up on the hill in the forest as advertised. I found the service was good, even when the kellers were really busy. None of them looked like much for food, though, which was a bit sad. Otherwise, though it’s a great place to drink and one of the cooler pub crawls you can do in Franconia.

Our Forchheim visit turned out to be a (very) damp squib. We planned to do the 4 brewery outlets in the town, then hit Kellerwald, finally tidying up any beers we’d missed back in town. Unfortunately Hebendanz only opens mornings on Thursday (it was Thursday), Neder should close at 7pm but was already closed at 5 when we arrived and Eichhorn was unexpectedly closed too. So we trekked off up to the Kellerwald, deciding to start at the very top (Neder) and work down. Then, without warning, it started pissing with rain - real monsoon stuff - so we decided to sit it out at Neder, which was pleasant but not what we planned. Three hours later the rain relented enough for us to venture forth, only to find that nearly all the other kellers had shut up shop, or were about to. So we started trudging back to town only for the heavens to open again and we got drenched. When we got back to town Eichhorn remained shut and Greif was closing soon. Better have another go at this some time!

Magical place. A bunch of huts and seating areas amongst a forest on a hill. It reminds me of Fairy Castle just out of Geelong, even though nobody reading this will know what that is. We got there at about 4pm on a day when most of the kellers should’ve been open but to my horror only the Greif keller was open. As we sat and had a beer the Hebendanz brewery opened, and as we were there... and so on. Lovely people at each keller we went to, and some fantastic beers. Half the kellers are owned by Wolfshöhe, but basically every other brewery there does fantastic beer. (And if you’re into geocaching there’s a cool cache hidden somewhere on the hill.) One of the world’s great beer destinations.

We visited the Lowenbrau keller/biergarten during an off-season evening, and they were nice enough to show us the ancient, candllelit keller. Along the way you can see them filling up earthenware mugs with tasty kellerbier from the barrel. Also had some good bratwurst. I’d love to come back when more of the places are open. (Should the Kellerwald really be listed as one place, considering there are many biergartens there? I guess it’s a moot point until there are more ratings here.)

This hill is a 2-kilometer walk from Forchheim’s altstadt or train station. There are over 20 bierkellers on this hill, representing close to 10 different breweries, amongst which are the 4 Forchheim breweries (Neder, Hebendanz, Greif, Eichhorn), the 2 Buttenheim breweries (Sankt-Georgen- Bräu and Löwenbräu), and Brauerei Krug in Breitenlesau. Walking under the shade of tall trees from keller to keller, trying different local breweries’ beers is pretty much what I’d call summer heaven. If there weren’t so many kellers owned by Wolfshöhe, this place would be a treasure on the world craft beer stage.
