RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Small, simple, cramped and atmospheric pub in the same street as The Market Porter. Perhaps hasn't survived being taken over by Young's.
In the tour because it's a Young's pub. If you only have time for this Southwark tour, then The Wheatsheaf is better than The Bunch of Grapes (also in Southwark), but there are better Young's pubs in London.

| GuideDogSaint (10), Epsom, England | | June 23, 2008 Youngs pub so not my favourite. OK I suppose but really only worth one in here before you go somewhere more interesting. | | JoeMcPhee (202), Jackson Heights, New York | | November 1, 2007 Stopped in here after exhausting the selection at the Market Porter just next door. The selection really wasn’t all that hot, but it’s not a bad place to stop in for a pint. | | Rastacouere (408), Montréal, Quebec | | August 3, 2007 A convenient location for a Young’s outlet, right by the Market porter where you will go anyway, but not worth any detour for itself. the place feels nice enough, small and kinda homey, but you will want to switch over to the market soon enough. Still, if looking for casked Youngs and having a limited time in London, hop in, you’ll find them in good condition and will be pretty time efficient. | | bhensonb (244), Woodland, California | | July 10, 2007 It’s ok. It was really interesting back in the day. It was a sawdust local sans sawdust. Had numbers of out of town ales. If you are nostalgic, it’s worth a visit. The basic structure is still there, just a whole lot cleaner. | | louchemobile (11), Barrow-in-Furness, England | | September 7, 2005 I’ve been several times in the past few months and every time the Young’s Pilsner, which is a tasty beer, has been oxidised. The flavour of damp, dusty cardboard is unmistakeable.
The pub is emblazoned with a banner proclaiming some cellarmanship prize so, if the cellar is not in question, then oxidised beer must be coming from the brewery. Shame on you. | | argo0 (173), Washington DC | | August 25, 2005 I was underwhelmed by this place -- surely there are better Young’s pubs in town. | | SilkTork (55), Rochester, England | | August 13, 2004 Not totally knocked out by this place. Two railway carriage rooms separated by the bar and a thin wall. It picked up a huge reputation when it was a freehouse - selling a good range of microbrewery stuff in excellent condition. Youngs are keeping up with that tradition by offering a changing guest, but - at least in the daytime - it lacked atmosphere for me. And the famous candles seemed pointless when light was flooding in from the new windows at the back! |
