6 reviews for The Quarry House Tavern
| Bierkrug (87), Idar-Oberstein (in Pakistan), Germany | | August 7, 2009 [ Updated August 8, 2009 ] Well what they say is true. At first when you find the place you will see the stairs. There is no real sign to the place right now but there is a piece of notebook paper stuck on the wall with Quarry House hand written on it. Had it not been for what others had wrote I would have never entered. I am glad I did.
It is a dive at first and I almost left because I did not see the normal beer bottles on the wall, but then I said well I am here let me at least see the beer menu. Wow, what can I say when the first three pages were Belgium’s. There where over 130 beers listed with only 6 Macros.
The beers change at times and the staff seemed to know their beers well even through they are young.
The place itself is nothing special but the fast food is good and the beer selection out of this world. | TheBigSmooth (2), California does not count - explanation | | May 21, 2009 I love this bar. In a city that is full of chains and bars that are little too trendy this bar is a refreshing exception from the norm.
The decent down the steps the first time makes the patron question if it is a good idea to continue, but once you sit down grab a cold one and some fried pickles you are feeling great.
I love the vibe, the service, the beer list, the food, the patrons and the neighborhood.
Check it out.
| bbarbot (1), Silver Spring, Maryland does not count - explanation | | March 6, 2008 The Quarry House was taken over in (I believe) late ’06 or early ’07, and it’s a completely different animal from the initial reviews. The bottled beer list has grown huge (in a good way - over 125 by my latest count), organized by country, and features a very strong selection of Belgian bottles, among other North American micros. They typically have 6 or 7 on tap almost always Guinness, a couple of more typical mega-micros, and always at least one real temptation and/or local (Ommegang or Tupper’s Hop Pocket, e.g.). Monday night is half-price burger night, and their black-and-blue burger (blackened seasoning with blue cheese) is a killer deal at about $3.50 for the burger, which comes with the best tater tots to be found in DC. The ambience is definitely dive-ish it’s literally in the basement, and feels like it, but has much more of a traditional British pub vibe to it as a result. It’s not been buffed out the way so many Silver Spring establishments have been since the renovation. Still has its old-school charm, from the live music to the juke box, while serving up the best bar beer list in lower MoCo, if not much of the area. | | radagast83 (43), Fairfax, Virginia | | April 18, 2007 Interesting place. The first reaction to this place could either be that it is a nice cozy location, like a real tavern, or it could be a reaction that the place is just a little "run down". I move toward the former.
Service was not too bad, and the staff was friendly.
Suprisingly they have a pretty good selection for what you’d expect. Didn’t have time to catch a bite to eat, but probably would have if not for the movie I had to catch.
| | jeffin7 (21), Silver Spring, Maryland | | June 7, 2005 Its a cozy hole in the wall. Not a great beer selection but you should always be able to get at least a few good local brews. Very good burgers and sandwiches. Nothing at all fancy but a nice place if you are a local or have some time to kill in Silver Spring. | | jde123 (58), Washington, Washington DC | | March 19, 2005 [ Updated December 8, 2007 ] I had a great time here. Lot’s of great beer on tap, much of it local, which is a big plus with me. A very extensive bottled collection as well, categorized by country - changes regularly. Definitely lives up to its reputation of the best beer selection in Montgomery County. Pretty decent bar food as well, specialize in tater tots, fried pickles are great with a hot dog. This place is a nice basement dive bar with themes avery day of the week. Nice music venue on thursdays. |
