| yemenmocha (61), Glendale, Arizona | | October 5, 2009 Great service, convenient & cute location, but somewhat limited as far as craft beer selection. In fact that was my only negative was that the craft beer selection was quite limited and omitted several very popular breweries (such as Founder’s), among others. Employees did not seem knowledgeable about craft beer, did not know about several popular names, and politely informed me that if I don’t see it then they don’t carry it.
Prices were reasonable given the area. For wine and spirits it wasn’t too bad either. I just wish they had more craft beer.
| | thornecb (14), Marblehead, Massachusetts | | June 25, 2009 Nice little store on Newbury Street. Convenient to the Hynes T stop and Newbury Comics. Helpful staff is always present - but try and give you whatever limited room you may want for browsing. They don’t let you break-up 6-packs which is unfortunate as they usually have a couple of brews that aren’t available elsewhere, but don’t necessarily warrant the volume. That said, they have a quality selection of local, US and European beers. High prices are as expected for the area. | | mreeves (34), Sammamish, Washington | | April 18, 2009 Nice store, mostly focused on wine but with a good selection of beer as well. Some local micros, and some West Coast beers too (Stone, Anderson Valley, Ballast Point, The Bruery to name a few). A good, but not great, selection, but a good place to find some good beer if you’re in the Back Bay area. | | Philip (64), Illinois | | September 3, 2008 What Bauer has going for it most is the area around it, which is a great for dining and shopping and simply walking around. I liked Newberry street a lot, and you can’t beat a dinner at Clio nearby. Unfortunately the store has a much better wine selection than a beer selection, and while I realize that space is limited, there’s more emphasis here on the everyday than the unique. There were a few things worthwhile, including Ten Fidy and several others of the Oskar series. I didn’t see any of the rare beers others on the site here reference, such as Speedway. Given the choice, I’d recommend Charles Street Liquors. On the plus side, the people were friendly, and I ended up with a few bottles of wine to take home. | | Tweety (10), Vancouver, Washington | | March 19, 2008 A small place, but with quite a bit of selection packed in, numerous shelfs of rare imports and hand-craft specialties. Very helpful staff, and decent prices make it a nice little place for your specialty needs. | | yobdoog (92), Woodridge NY, New York | | February 29, 2008 One of the shops I stopped in along my way. Well kept, clean nice place down stairs. Pretty good selection. Had some on shelves and some in coolers. Nice staff, asked if I needed help. I was just browsing to get an idea of what was in the area. Worth visiting if you are in the area. Local stuff and other stuff that is harder to find it seemed. | | TURDFERGUSON (38), Carrboro, North Carolina | | February 13, 2008 Visited here back in October ’07 while in town visiting some friends and honoring the funk. Nice little store, but they wouldn’t allow me to use their restroom which kind of annoyed me. Maybe they didn’t have one. Picked up some stuff from southern tier, alesmith, and smuttynose that I can’t get in NC. A rather small selection, as they are mainly a wine and spirit store (surprise), but a decent one with some nice brews. Oh yeah, they also had some 2001 3F gueuze that they had just gotten in that day. Yes, I’ll take 2. | | Nate (194), Indiana, Pennsylvania | | February 9, 2008 Visited here in Aug ’02 for the ACS Meeting. Walked over during my first evening in town with a buddy to find some beers to rate in the hotel. Found Aecht and several New England brews to try. Decent selection, prices were not surprising for a big city, and the people were helpful enough. | | notalush (159), Denver, Colorado | | March 2, 2007 We’re on a short trip to Boston this weekend - we were shopping on Newbury street anyway, so we popped in here - this place is highly over-rated - very small space, with a decent wine selection - about one cooler/fridge full of beer, with a few cases sitting on the floor next to it - nothing I didn’t see at any of the other local stores (pizza port wipeout, two brother’s bare tree, lagunitas 13 were the most "stand out") - semi-pretentious atmosphere - nothing special, and hardly worth a stop, even if you ARE in the area. |
