| Silphium (50), Lansing, Michigan | | June 29, 2008 Nice little brewery in a sleepy town south of Grand Rapids, situated in an old brick building with high ceilings and hardwood floors, creating nice ambiance. I believe there were 9 different beers on tap on my last visit (perhaps more), so the selection is decent, and the beer quality has steadily improved since the brewery/restaurant opened. In addition, the food is solid. I’ve sampled only the pizzas, but they were the best brewpub pizzas I’ve had anywhere. I recommend a visit to anyone in the general area (Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo are just over 30 miles away, and Lansing is roughly 45 miles away) who is interested in going off the beer-ten path and trying something besides the big names in the area. | sudsybear (1), Hopkins, Michigan does not count | | June 13, 2008 We have been here quite often a short drive for us and enjoy the atmosphere and food. Some of the entrees are pricey, their pizza is really good and at a great price. My wife is a stout drinker and llikes their state street stout.Average by her standards. I tried their new pawan pale ale. It is nothing special ligth hoppy taste with a bitter finish. Hopnoxious is a good pale ale but will only be offered on a seasonal basis. Bartender said it is because of the price of hops. He said they can make 3 batches of the Pawan as compared to 1 batch of the Hopnoxious.
Also had a pint of their summer wheat. great flavor with a nice citrus finish. | SMARTESTMONKEY (1), Indianapolis, Indiana does not count | | November 24, 2007 Visited this brewpub the day before Thanksgiving. The atmosphere was great and I really liked the set up of the place. The service was good, although they weren’t really busy. The waiter was attentive and didn’t have a problem splitting my order of fish and chips on two plates so my wife could share. He also offered a sample of a beer I wanted to try before I bought it. Their Leaves Have Fallen brown porter was a little thin for me, a little light on flavor, but the chai-spiced hefeweizen was amazing. I’ll definitely go back when I’m in the area. | | jonwayne4883 (12), Grand Rapids, Michigan | | February 27, 2007 great to finally have a brewpub in hastings, no matter what the naysayers have to offer. tried four of their beers opening night in a sampler, pretty darn good. food isnt half bad either and service is great. brewmaster often on hand to answer questions. | shanty831 (1), MIDDLEVEILLE, Michigan does not count | | November 28, 2006 We LOVE this place! We were so excited to have them open up this past summer. Admittedly, when they first opened, things didn’t exactly run smooth. However, since then, the food has been fantastic, the service extremely accomodating, the beer extremely thirst quenching, and the Owner/Manager is very, very pleasant. Unlike the other review, my experiences have been great. Never had any trouble with the selection of beer (Phantasm is my fav!). They can get extremely busy though, and they do not have a dedicated parking area, so plan on walking a block or two on the weekends. | bandit1200 (5), shelbyville, Michigan does not count | | November 15, 2006 I tried, I really did. Went back no less than 6 times. Bottom line, the worst brewpub I’ve ever been to. Always out of at least 1 beer, terrible service, average food, and the rudest manager\owner I’ve ever met..I’ll drive 30 more miles and go to kalamazoo before I go to this place again. |
