RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Set near Rice Park in downtown St. Paul, Great Waters is perfect for before anything at the Excel Energy Center or Ordway Theatre. Their beers range in quality from very solid and interesting to run-of-the-mill boring. A sampler is always worth the stop if you’re in the neighborhood, otherwise, call ahead to see what they’ve got before you decide to take the trip into this town if you’re not already by it.

Steib | Was there in the middle of the afternoon, not crowded. Service was pathetic. Slow, had too remind the waitress that i ordered a beer and she forgot. This was between lunch and dinner so we got a limited menu which was fine. We had an assorment of dishes, onion rings, sandwiches, pizza and nachos. lets just say it was mediocre to horrible. One saving grace was the beer was great and they had a sample tray.

Syd | This place seems to have improved nicely over the past 3 years. The service rules, the food is decent, and the beers seems somehow better. I really would like to see these guys continue to exist and prosper.

LawStudent09 | I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the nice clean look. The waitress was polite but a bit slow. The beers were not bad, especially the blackwatch stout. I did not have anything to eat but from glancing around it looked like decent food. This is a nice place to come and relax and enjoy a beer but nothing to get horribly excited about.

| divenpuke | 11/11/07 In town for cousin’s wedding,
Geat service.
Food Awesome!!!!!
No stout :(
The brown was really a porter, but it was a very good porter. Every other beer was marginal at best.

CaptainCougar | A pretty standard brewpub with food that looked a bit on the expensive side, but I didn’t eat there. They had one beer on cask and about 8 others. Nothing infected or that off, just nothing that great or noteworthy.

Dansting | Came on a Thursday for lunch. Hard to find parking (we had to pay $5 at a parking garage). Located in a beautiful part of Saint Paul, just minutes from the capital. Service wasn’t that good at first, as it took a while to have our order taken, especially since it wasn’t that busy when we got there. The sampler was for eight beers, but they only had seven available at our stop, so the bartender gave us a half-pint of our favorite one to make up for it. I was a big fan of their Full Broadside India Pale Ale. Food wasn’t that great, although I’ll give them a break since I wasn’t too hungry. It costs about what you’d expect at a downtown brewpub in a business district.

MoreHead | They had 10 of their beers written on the chalkboard. I was only able to try 4 and thought they brew a taste, but safe set of beers. Had pork chops for dinner and thought the meat was very average but the sauce was tastey. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Stine | Seems designed for the white collar social climber crowd. Unspectacular beers that give the folks who want to stick their toes in the water a safe chance to do it. The prices during happy hour are great, but barely better than Town Hall’s. So i only go to Great Waters when i’m downtown on a weeknight, past ten o’clock, for some other reason. The bartenders here are good guys, and yes, holy smokes could they use an interior decorator. The place looks like a convention hall board meeting space.

StewardofGondor | Decent place with seven beers on tap when I visited. Most were bitters or pale ales of some degree, and there was a hefe, stout and brown ale as well. Nothing was spectacular, but the four cheese pizza was tasty. They could really use an interior decorator as well.

PorterPounder | Visited here on a rainy weekend in late April ’06. Nice downtown setting with a great view of Rice Park and the Landmark Building. Had about ten on tap, four on cask, the the rest "on push" as they call it. All were above average - especially enjoyed the Blackwatch Oat Stout. Served much warmer than usual, which was appeciated, especially by my wife. The food was about average considering the price - but you are paying for the downtown location. Crowds were a bit sparse, hopefully it was just becuase of the nasty weather.
