The wine list is seemingly bottomless and the beer selection is a worthy companion. It is very small and the only food is cheese, cashews, pretzels, etc. but the beer (ok, and the wine) make this place worthy of being listed on RateBeer.com. I enjoyed a couple of Unibroues and a friend had an Orval and a Franzekaner. GREAT selection of bottles and you can get them to go as well. Nice low light, and definately a good place to take a date. Smoke free is also a bonus. Well, there’s the selection, each beer picked by the man selling it because he likes it. That means no crap. Just yummy beer. It’s not a big list, but it doesn’t need to be. Lots of good brews with very little overlap.
It could be the service, which is nothing short of excellent. They’re prompt, friendly and get to know their customers. Top-notch.
It could be the quality, unlike any other place I’ve ever been too, every beverage in the place is stored either in a 55 dgree cellar or a cool, dark case. Nothing sits warm, nothing sits in the light, that means if a beer got to 33 in reasonable condition, it’ll be in reasonable condition when you drink it.
Small place so there’s not a lot of seating and on weekends it can get quite crowded and loud. When it’s crowded indoors, the patio out back is very nice, great for spring and summer evening and with a small group I can normally find seating as long as I don’t show up too late.
Jake, the owner, is really personable and is really excited about good beer. Beer is available for both on-premises consumption and take-away. The take-away prices are very fair, and the drink-in prices reasonable as well, though the mark-ups on wine are even more reasonable. Beer is definitely a secondary focus, but it’s clear that the owner, Jake, is quite passionate about beer.
The beer list is about 40 selections, versus several hundred wine selections, but there is not a dud on the list, and the selection rotates. Plenty of Belgian, Bell’s, British, and Unibroue. All kept in temperature-controlled storage. Taps have recently been added with St. Bernardus 12 and La Chouffe breaking them in.
Lots of folks drink beer here, and Jake, the owner, is as happy to pontificate on a $4 bottle of beer as he is on a $40 bottle of wine. Definitely a man who knows that taking care of his customers with personal, thoughtful service is a key to long-term success. My highest recommendation. |
