10 reviews for Downtown Bar and Grill
160COURTST (1), BROOKLYN, New York does not count - explanation | | February 22, 2009 They have over 800 bottles of beer inculding rare and vintage brews. The food was great and our server jason was delightful. | | puzzl (70), New York, New York | | February 6, 2009 Decent beer selection but a very typical sports bar — I feel like I’m in Ohio suburbs or something when I’m in this place. Food sucks, and the servers tend to botch your cheques with even remotely complex orders. Very expensive. A great bottle selection is certainly this bar’s selling point, with a special emphasis on Captain Lawrence brews (batch 1 Nor’Easter, for instance), but again you’ll pay out the nose for them: $40 for the above. (Oh, and no Cuvee de Castleton, don’t get your hopes up). Not worth a stop unless you are desperate or in the area. | keithk (9), ny, New York does not count - explanation | | January 12, 2009 **Pros: about 20 nicely chosen taps, a huge beer list, bartenders willing to give you a sample, and very above-average bar food. Service is very attentive. Tables on the sidewalk in good weather, and a small "lounge" area with couches in the front. Lots of TV’s usually playing sports. (You might consider this a con)
**Cons: Place has the distinct look of your average new and clean Irish pub, you would never expect it to be a serious beer bar. Ambiance is weird. Always a bizarre mix of music playing, every time I go, 70’s and 80’s pop/rock and not a pleasant memory lane trip either. | derst27 (2), Hackettstown, New Jersey does not count - explanation | | April 23, 2008 [ Updated June 3, 2008 ] They are SO OVERPRICED that I had to take out a Home Equity loan to cover my tab. Some of the bottles are $25-$30, yeah for a regular bottle and the double mixers are $17!! Usually Irish bartenders are pretty jolly and friendly, not so, NOT SO!! Guys a jerk.
The only thing they’ve got going for them is their ridiculously huge beer selection. ALSO, fyi their ginger ale may be flat and the bartender won’t let you know about it, he’ll just serve it like its hot...awful | | JoeMcPhee (262), Jackson Heights, New York | | August 1, 2007 Decent place in the middle of Cobble Hill. One of the largest bottled selections in the city. A small but well chosen tap list. Long dark bar and a friendly barkeep. Sunday soccer games attract a lot of Europeans. It’s a pretty solid place, all things considered. | | Walt (185), Chicago, Illinois | | December 23, 2006 Wow! What a cool place and the owner is awesome!!!!!! Great selection!!! He even took us into the cellar! Food was great too!!!! | | notalush (159), Denver, Colorado | | October 15, 2006 We finally got around to going to this place - fairly nice interior, with an atmosphere that seems geared toward attracting upper-middle class yuppie types, which, considering the neighborhood, isn’t really a surprise - 12 taps with nothing much of interest on them - aside from the local stuff (sixpoint, brooklyn) they pretty much have guinness, pilsner urquell and the like - the bottle selection is quite nice, but aside from the Utopias, there isn’t anything here you can’t walk up the block to American Beer (or to Bierkraft in Park Slope) for - our bartender/waiter seemed a bit annoyed to have to deal with the public, which is a little odd for this kind of establishment - the menu is pretty original, and our food was quite tasty (I had a salmon burger with avocado and sprouts) - in short, it’s a yuppie bar with an above-average beer selection - I’d rather go around the block to the Waterfront or the Brazen Head. | starny (1), New York does not count - explanation | | August 1, 2006 i visiited this place last week and i was really pleased to have them in cobblehill.
the owner told me that the list of beer is being updated every week and all bottles are priced.and i was happy to have my favorite dogfish 90 min on tap,and they also have on tap : magic hat#9, captain lawrence , carlsberg , pilsener, guiness , hop angel , brooklyn lager, sapporo and some other kind, and they also told me they they will have different microbreweries on tap soon.
the place looks great , the owner , Robert in a real pro in beer, and i was pleased by his generosity , the food really complement the huge selection of beer, big platter appetizer for a decent price and a pounder burger that will bring me back very soon. and if your are a sports fan this place has 5 flat screen TV, so you want miss a thing.
i met there akso some beer fanatics whose shared their beer experience.
it’s a great place. | | beastiefan2k (108), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas | | July 26, 2006 [ Updated May 29, 2008 ] As soon as Peter added this I knew I had to go, pretty much for the Utopias. Its a nice looking place, some exposed brick, high ceilings, lots of wood - very trendy. Its one of those places with lots of beers but not enough people who know beer. Big list - with no prices by the way. The bartender didn’t know crap, I asked her what the Captain Lawrence is and she said its like a Sierra. Then I asked, no I want to know what kind of beer it is and she said ale. So i figured she meant a Pale Ale. And for a place thats relatively new its already missing beers or there are beers in the fridge that are not on the menu. The one upside is they actually have some dated bottles. I guess since the owner owned a beer store he has some reserves (nothing too old). But I scored an Ithaca Smoked Porter, which is seasonal. They had an older bottle of Mad Bitch. Its alright but if you open a beer centered restaurant, maybe make that a priority when you sell it. UPDATE - the service still sucks, keep going back and it never gets better. They do events now but the price are too high for tap lists that are often not interesting. | | PilsnerPeter (95), Flushing, New York | | July 20, 2006 [ Updated August 11, 2006 ] I was amazed when I found out about this place. They had a sign outside advertising their Sam Adams Utopias. So I went in and asked about it. The guy who owns this place is the guy who owned Happy Deli in Manhattan. His name’s Robert, he’s really cool. He know his beers, and gave me a free sample of Sam Adams Utpoias!!! And as a thankyou to him I’m letting all of you fellow rate beerians about his place. It’s got a great selection. Over 30 countries and around 300 bottles. He has a full beer menu that was around 8 pages. He basically transferred his Happy Deli into Brooklyn and made it a beer bar. He also has 12 taps including some Brooklyns, Magic Hat, Sierra Neveda, which are all I can remember at this point. He also still has Sam Adams Utopias for $15 an ounce and Sam Adams Chocolate Bock. Great place. |
