RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Like most beer destinations, SDG is full of atmosphere and quirkiness. Very cool. Check out the funky, upscale grocery one block south on the corner - it’s just as cool, though it’s got no beer.

theviolet | Cool store. They had a good selection that matched a lot of stuff they had at the bar. The man who was in there was very knowledgeable and friendly. I’d definetely return, and I liked the set up a lot.

bonbright7 | I hunted for this one amid all the coffee shops, bars, trinket shops, and new construction and it’s a few blocks from the parent company in a little mini-mall. There was one guy standing there who was quite friendly and he had volumes of knowledge to share. I saw many unique items there and with the guy’s advice, I picked up a cool 750ml of Ithaca White Gold and hungered for more than I could carry into the subway. The L train stop at Bedford Ave is 3 blocks away from this treasure.

raymondwave | Pretty well hidden and small, but with a very nice collection from americas, europe, japan.. As a scandinavian I was pleased to find some goods from my area too. Staff was very helpful with true beer geek kind of knowledge and they even provided cardboard packaging.

PilsnerPeter | Very hard to find, even when walking down the street. You have to walk into the indoor mall which has a cafe at the front entrance. It’s got a warm ambiance with a fully wooden inner decor. The lighting is a bit dull, but the bottles are very carefully selected. Not extremely extensive, but what they do have is worth while. They also have the South African Meads from Honey Sun which I found very interesting. Moderately priced, friendly staff, worth stopping to if in the area.

| xibalba89 | Hidden from public view, the new Spuyten Duyvel Grocery is another great beer store in New York. The selection isn’t massive, and their prices aren’t amazing, but they carry plenty of beers that my usual beer store, New Beer Distributors, doesn’t usually carry. The staff is affable and keen to help out in any way possible. The ambiance is great, too, with a nice cozy wooden feel that makes it seem like it’s been there for decades. This place is going to make my trips to Williamsburg much more costly!

RblWthACoz | Tucked away in a corner shop inside the Bedford mall is a place that looks exactly like you’d expect the owners of SD to open. Dark and slightly worn down looking (purposefully so), they have chosen to focus more on quality than quantity. My measure of a store is whether or not I see something I have never seen before. Lo and behold, I found that here. Even after seeing all the places to purchase beer here in the NYC area, I still found something that I had seen nowhere else. With New Beer and Bierkraft having such big selections, it might not be worth a long trip. But hey, it’s the first Brooklyn stop on the L, so why not give it a shot.

notalush | In a small indoor mall on Bedford between N. 4th and N. 5th, right where the Bedford Cheese Shop used to be - small, dimly lit (a bit too much so) space with a "country general store" kind of decor/feel to it - an interesting selection of jams, pickles, chocolates, chips (pretty much all higher-end snack food), although I was a bit disappointed that there was no cheese, considering Spuyten has some great cheeses (but hell, there’s already a great cheese shop on this block) - well-selected group of single bottle beers (don’t come looking to grab a few six packs) - these guys, obviously, know their beer, so they know exactly what to stock (they have all the worthwile stuff the other stores have, and none of the "lesser" beers) - in other words, this is a beer nerd beer store - nice selection of glasswear - the guy running the place was friendly, chatty, and helpful (when I got there he was doing a geat job of recommending beers to the other patrons) - Williamsburg has a lot of great bars, but they’ve been starved for a great beer store, until now.

beastiefan2k | Same owner as the bar (man this guy is taking over). A bit hard to find, its in a small mini-mall right by a record store on the corner of Norht 5th. The bookstore in the mini-mall is very cool as well. Small place, dark and wooden selves, one small fridge. But I tell you what this is the nicest decorated beer store anywhere. Some food treats but I did not even look at them. Lots of glasses, I picked up a Westy goblet (their last) for 10 bucks, they also had Cantillon shirts (all large sizes though). Selection is not "large" meaning they wont have too many Pales Ales or Ambers. But plenty of beers you ar interested in. Just sold their last 5L keg of Schlenkerla Urbock, which was well priced at $25. Some rarier gems that would be harder to find like Pannepot and the Hand brewery. However those beers come at a premium pruce tag. Not all beers cost a lot some actually cheaper than usual. So those even out and I would say that on average a buck more than fair prices. Service was great, the guy working their is a beer geek and we shot the shit for a while.

austinpowers | On our visit, SDG offered four different Lakefront beers from Wisconsin, which I haven’t seen in NYC before. Mostly, the selection is Belgian and is pretty impressive. The store also sells exotic chocolate. Located inside a teensy mall on Bedford Ave near 5th St.

JoeMcPhee | A well-selected group of beers. A few small coolers with some chilled items and a fair number of well selected, more obscure brews. Some rare stuff from Allagash, de Ranke, the Ithaca big bottle series and other well selected brews from around the world. Not loads of stuff, but there are lots of things that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a great addition to the local scene and definitely worth checking out.
