RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Sakagura is located on 43rd St. between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. It is very hard to find, as there is no sign and it’s in the basement of a nondescript office building. It has the largest selection of sakes in NYC (and East of San Francisco) and is a pleasant space, with courteous service and enough lighting to see the menu. The food is enjoyable, authentic Japanese fare, and the 200+ sakes on the menu should keep you busy. This is your chance to order a taster of a Daiginjo from Niigata or Nada that you’d otherwise pay a fortune for, so be adventurous!

One of the most amazing dining experience of our travels. 10 courses (4 dessert) and a sake to match each one. Stick to cheap to moderate priced sakes until the last few courses (some are as high as $30 a shot-sized serving). Waitstaff was among the best we have seen, describing in detail every course, explaining the sauces, explaining the sakes. You can stop in for a $10 drink or a $200 meal.

Amazing sake selection!!!!!!! Food was outstanding, but of course, it was tiny portions too...I want to go back to NYC just to go to this place.

If you like sake, this place is definitely the place to go as there are over 200 there at any given time. The food is pretty average and expensive for what it is. Not as hard to find as I initially thought. Decor is typical Japanese, nothing special. The service staff are friendly if a bit rushed and are knowledgeable of the sake menu. Go there when you want to try sake and have a walletful of cash as this place gets pricey very quickly.

The place to go on the east coast for sake! 200 - 300 different varieties. Staff is courteous and very helpful. Food could have used a bit of work, but make sure you get the tradition Japanese recipes. Great place for sake, don’t expect to leave full though.

This is the #1 sake joint in NYC (and perhaps the United States) and is worth the trip if you'd like to sample some quality junmai daiginjo while you're in Midtown. Located in the basement of an unmarked office building, so you'll need its address to find it: 211 E. 43rd (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues). Take the elevator down. Full of Japanese expats, which is a good sign. Its main rival is Decibel on 9th Street, but that is grungy, dark, the menu isn't clearly labeled, and the service there is brusque. Sakagura is the better choice unless you love East Village grunge.
