| HoppityHop (45), New Jersey | | August 31, 2008 The reason why this place is never crowded (even though it’s smack-dab-in-the-middle of the LES) is because it’s so ridiculously overpriced, you’d be a fool to drink here. 12oz bottles of Saison Dupont cost $11, Three Philosophers cost $9, and believe it or not, a Bud Light is $7 bucks! I walked without trying a single thing. Then again, their selection was so middle of the road, it wasn’t a great loss. | | notalush (158), Denver, Colorado | | August 16, 2008 Since when did they separate this listing from Hop Devil? - I have mixed feelings about this place - the ambiance is most certainly better then Hop Devil, and it’s usually more comfortable and less crowded - however, it really isn’t a different bar from HD - it just happens to be another room that also has s few other taps - they have a decent selection of lambic bottles, but nothing compared to Spuyten Duyvil - I guess if you’re visiting Hop Devil there is no reason not to go, but if it were stand-alone I probably wouldn’t go here - much like Joe, I don’t understand why there are separate entries, but hey, it’s another place rating! | | dchmela (52), Orlando, Florida | | July 8, 2008 Popped in here after visiting Hop Devil. Some nice stuff on tap, mostly belgian styles of American beer, but good stuff. I had a Southhampton Witte that was delicious. Didn’t have any food because we ate at the Hop Devil, but it looked good. Bartender was also knowledgeable. Good place. | | puzzl (70), New York, New York | | March 20, 2008 A decent place. I kind of lump this in with hop devil, they are essentially the same place. They only have 5 or 6 taps here, with a few that never change. They used to have a great selection of bottled sours but they basically have nothing left anymore, and the prices for those are through the roof. Two years ago I got a Lou Pepe Kriek here for $23... thats long gone, and now they have the Brouscella for $33. What? | | rlgk (80), Vårgårda, Sweden | | March 10, 2008 Really nice place, just next to Hop Devil. Great selection and nice staff with knowledge. I enjoyed my time here alot. | | yobdoog (92), Woodridge NY, New York | | February 19, 2008 I love the Belgian Room. Always so many good beers on tap and the lighting is perfect. They have a ton of bottles too. Things you most likely won’t find elsewhere as fat as belgians go. The food is great. You can get the same food as Hop Devil, next door but it is nice to eat delicious Frites in the proper lighting with the proper beverage. It is comfortable to eat and hang out and is not as loud as its brother. Nice and fun. | | bonbright7 (35), Bellport, New York | | November 21, 2007 As I was visiting the Hop Devil next door, I went to this low key place which drew my attention from the street. It’s dark decor made me feel like I was in Europe again and it’s cool vibe made it very comfortable. Small tap selection (6), but a good bottle groupings of Belgian or Belgian -style (40+). As I had the Rare Vos on tap, I saw the Belgian Frites go by with the bartender and they invited me to try some. Great date place! I actually liked it better than its more famous brother. | | Walt (185), Chicago, Illinois | | December 23, 2006 Cool bar next to Hop Devil...the bartender was sort of an ass to me though, which I felt was uncalled for. Great selection though! Dark and warm feeling bar...cool none the less. | craige (3), Hoboken, New Jersey does not count - explanation | | November 28, 2006 I love the Belgian Room. It is currently one of my favorite bars in the city. The reasons are: always has free tables, friendly and thoroughly knowledgable staff, cheap and tasty food, not pretentious, and of course, great selection of beer. No, it’s not cheap, but I don’t drink cheap beer, so. You can, in fact, walk into the other half of the bar, buy a beer there, and bring it in to the Belgian Room, and vice versa. The waitstaff just won’t do it for you. Sadly, they stopped serving poutine, but you can still get that before or after at that fry place around the corner. Although I never do, since the regular fries with dipping sauce at The Belgian Room are so damn good. If I’m eating there I always get the Buffalo chicken sandwich. Yum. Definitely not your average pub grub. But almost everything is still under $10. | | JoeMcPhee (262), Jackson Heights, New York | | November 26, 2006 Not a bad spot, although it is significantly upstaged by the attached Hop Devil Grill. I can’t quite understand the rationale of having these places separate, although the vibe in each is quite different. The Belgian Room is a bit loungier, with low red lighting and a much smaller selection of taps than at the Hop Devil. Shared kitchen, but different menus and the taps at Hop Devil can’t be purchased at the Belgian Room or vice versa. Good (if expensive) bottle selection. Mussels are quite good although the frites could be better. Definitely worth checking out if in the East Village. |
