25 reviews for Zeno’s Pub
| iggynelix (10), Pennsylvania | | October 30, 2009 classic town-basement pub. local musicians, live music and a strong 100+ bottle list. remarkable for a small town. always packed with college students. do not wear a tie. cheap for the offerings. | | TreborWhip (12), Reading, Pennsylvania | | September 22, 2009 Went there around 1730 to have a beer the Friday before the Penn State vs. Temple football game. At the bottom of the steps I was rudely greeted by a young man who said, "that’ll be $3.00." I said, "$3.00? For what?" He said, "For the band." I said, "What band, there’s no band playing. All I want to do is have a beer." He said, "$3.00." I said, "See you later!"
Bottom line, we never actually got further than the bottom of the steps. We could see instruments set up but no band was playing and there were very few people inside the place which was dark and dingy. The attitude of the "door attendant" completely turned me off. I will not go back. Wish I could have had the pleasant experiences that many of you have had. I wish I could have perused the beer menu and sipped a brown stout. Unfortunately, I was robbed of that opportunity by a rude employee. | | wilsomb (29), State College, Pennsylvania | | June 24, 2009 This place is a gem. They have the best selection for miles with over 30 taps and casks. There is live music all the time and an overall great bar feel. Highly recommend if you are in the area. It can get crowded if the undergrads are around, though. | | vze1mhay (12), Stroudsburg, | | June 16, 2009 Good place to duck away for a few excellent brews. Not to crowded for location next to PSU campus- not a place for funneling. Can’t wait to go back again | | Naka (11), Indiana, Pennsylvania | | January 6, 2009 Yes, yes, yes. This place is outstanding. This is not a place to come and dance, or do beer bongs, or take jello shots, like so many other places in State College. This place is where people who want outstanding beer come to drink. It is dark, dingy, (I wish the bathrooms didn’t follow this trend quite as thoroughly) and full of great beer, especially in the western / central PA market. Their beer menu is listed by styles, so for people who may be new to the beer world, there is some guidance. I had a bowl of clam chowder from the restaurant portion upstairs and it was pretty decent. My only real problem with the place is that there are quite a few beers on their menu that they didn’t have. There was one that they did have, but "it was buried and didn’t think they should sell it yet." Why have it on the menu? If you want character, selection, and possibly herpes from a toilet seat, it doesn’t get much better. | | nj4christ (14), Columbus, New Jersey | | December 18, 2008 This place is a gem. They have the best selection for miles with over 30 taps and casks. There is live music all the time and an overall great bar feel. Highly recommend if you are in the area. | | jmm635 (33), Havertown, Pennsylvania | | October 20, 2008 Love Zeno’s! I am a Penn Stater and maybe visited Zeno’s 2-3 times while in school, only because it’s a little expensive for a college student. Now that I have graduated, I make sure to visit Zeno’s everytime I go back! The selection is fantastic and the prices are right in line. This is a very cool place to hang out if you are visiting PSU. | | illinismitty (224), Nashville, Tennessee | | September 10, 2008 I stopped in on Tuesday around 5. The place was dead, but I was able to grab a seat right at the bar and watch the Simpson. Atmosphere is a your typical dark basement Selection is good. They even carry the local Ottos’ brews, draft and bottles. About 20 or so taps, including 3 beer engines. A good portion of their extensive bottle selection is displayed in glass door beer coolers. Street parking can be challenging, but there are parking garages nearby. Best selection I have seen in this part of PA. Prices are about average. Worth a stop if you are in State College. | | CharlesDarwin (144), Point Judith, Rhode Island | | May 21, 2008 Zeno’s isn’t bad. I’ve had my share of frustrations with it, but generally I enjoy the place. They easily have the best selection for hundreds and hundreds of miles. First off, they’ll be going smoke-free June 1st, which is awesome. Their draft prices are mostly fair (some imports can get pretty pricey). There’s always new drafts and new bottles. A couple of the bartenders are very knowledgeable, but a few are a bit more cursory. The places is usually inhabited by a decent crowd, with a low number of frat boys frequenting the place. The dark, dank basement atmosphere can get a bit dreary. But, when you’re on your way home from a long working Sunday and you can stop in a get a pull of 2006 Old Stock ale and sit in a dark corner by yourself, it’s pretty nice. One feature I like is that you can get the bottles to go from the bar and there’s usually a 10-15% discount on menu price. However, they’ve redone their bottle menu and the organization makes no sense (it’s based on beer flavor and appearance attributes). Draft is the way to go here I think, because there’s a lot of beer I don’t see move here. And the draft beer has always been in good shape. Good lines, good temperature and good carbonation. Casks are in great shape. Also nice is that you can order their bottles at the two restaurants upstairs (the Corner Room and the Allen Street Grill, the latter of which I think is a better version of what Zola’s is trying to do). I’ve never attended any of their festivals, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about those. In the end, this is a must-stop place in State College. | iride15 (2), Orlando, Florida does not count - explanation | | February 19, 2008 This is a great place to get away and have a beer with some friends. You can’t order a Bud or a Miller here, so this is a good place to try something new. It’s a smokey loud basement, but the atmosphere and selection far outweighs any negatives. Can be a bit steep, but just ask a college student when they have good discounts. Being a student here myself, they almost always have new discounts and good deals going around. |
