February 16, 2009 This was actually one of the better bars we visited in Charleston. The upstairs bar is actually pretty cooler. It looks like it may be the the top end as far as Mellow Mushroom goes, and they had incredible music playing the night we visited. Seriously, how often are you going to hear Iron and Wine played in a bar? The beer selection was a little better than what was on tap at Charleston Beer Works, but would easily be surpassed in a larger city. Sadly I missed being able to get a pint of Coast Brewing’s Black Beerd Imperial Stout by a single day here.
My only complaint is that they put the very cool and well-stocked bar on the top floor. Seriously, how are they going to expect drunk people to make it down that spiral staircase without falling to serious injury. Luckily, I stopped after a Victory Storm King and an Atlanta Brewing Bogart.
As for food, I really like Mellow Mushroom’s pizza and pretzels. They’ve got some of the best crust (texture and taste) of any chain pizza place I’ve ever been. |

February 6, 2009 Above-average Mellow Mushroom because they offer some of SC’s top brews. Split-level with the more family restaurant vibe downstairs and the bar area upstairs. Can watch sports here. They get overwhelmed when super crowded but otherwise good service. |

January 29, 2009 One of the better Mellow Mushrooms I’ve been to, and the best beer bar in Charleston. They were the one place that had the Imperial Stout from Coast Brewing and scored bonus points for that. Service was good. Oh yeah, and they’re open later than just about anybody else in Charleston, a town that really shuts down early. |

September 2, 2008 We ate dinner here our first night in Charleston. The decor is a bit odd with giant sci-fi murals that looked like they were from the 1970’s. The selection of beers was extensive, although our server had very littlle knowlege about the beers they offered. She also had no clue what they had on tap. I ended up ordering a couple of Palmetto beers, which were ok at best. The five of us each had a different pizza, and I have to say they were excellent. Being a New Yorker, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to pizza, but these were great. I especially liked the crust, which was whole wheat and tasted like it had a little honey in the dough too. Parking on King St. is difficult, but there is public parking around the corner that isn’t terribly expensive. |

July 2, 2008 This was a nice place to go to have a few brews. They have about 10 beers on draft and all are micros. They also have one cooler filled with bottled beer, which has a good selection as well. The pizza was great but the server had bit of an attitude. They didnt clean their lines before tapping a keg of Sweetwater 420 and they had a beer tap for rogue yellow snow ale and served it without explaining it was the juniper pale ale. |

March 20, 2008 Great beers, great pizza (we had the philosophers pie) and a good DJ playing raggae. Nice, my kind of place. |

January 28, 2008 Pretty typical Mellow Mushroom, two stories, downtown. The beer list was large enough to find something decent, though not mindblowingly impressive. It wasn’t busy at all, but the happenings amongst the staff made for an interesting visit (see NachlamSie’s review). Pizza was quite tasty. |
