| BeerFanDan17 (22), Land O Lakes, Florida | | August 2, 2009 A nice place to visit when in Portland. Lofty warehouse feel. Good selection of house beers but I didn’t notice anything else on draft or on the menu. Food was completely organic and really tasty. Beer cheese soup is a must. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | July 9, 2009 Good beer and good values mix together and pull me in. This very modern brewpub with its varnished wooden and metallic interior looks just like the bicycle shop that they decorate it to look like. This biking thematic could only seduce me, so I was more than thrilled when I realized that they also brew excellent beers. Their basic pils (Hub Lager) is a shining and rare North American example of an unfiltered and clean lager. Hoppier ales also worked nicely. Somehow, their bourbon barley wine ended up being my least favourite, but its in the sweet mold I don’t dig so much. The 10 taps and 2 casks should include something for even the most difficult palate. Friendly waiter was accomodating and interested, obviously liking his job, but some customers seemed to give him trouble when he had to send them back to pay to their waiter. Whenever I come back in Portland, I’ll be sure to visit this one again even if I find it a bit far from anything else, though easy to reach by bus) | btgpdx (2), does not count - explanation | | June 5, 2009 I used to live across the street from here. Before it came in we had to drink at the Bowling Alley bar (Hi Dan!). Its a great place to drink some very respectable beers. The food at the burrito cart 2 blocks down is better though. They were in Gourmet Magazine for their lengua burrito. | | Beardface (35), Eugene, Oregon | | May 11, 2009 Hopworks was a fun experience, extremely modern looking architecture, even the bathrooms were crazy modern and nice! It was very busy when we visited, but we were able to find a cozy corner for our 5 person group. The service was fairly prompt and the food (especially the pretzels and mustard) were very tasty. The beers ranged from mediocre to really good. The best were probably the Survival Stout which I’d sampled elsewhere before, and the Sasquatch. | | leems (27), Portland, Oregon | | May 9, 2009 Hopworks is always busy, which can be frustrating but I’ve never had a problem finding a seat in the bar. The food is pretty good, pizza and pub grub, the pretzels are pretty good and the mustard that comes with them is great. The beers are all their own and mostly pretty good. They cover all of the required styles but some of the beers are just not up my alley. If you like IPA I would steer clear of theirs, however definitely try the stout! The seasonal selections are also better than most of the standards. | SuperNeub (1), , Oregon does not count - explanation | | October 13, 2008 Great Beer. Inside and outside seating. Great menu variety. Rotating taps with seasonal selections. Great place. | | Angeloregon (11), Portland, Oregon | | August 28, 2008 [ Updated August 30, 2008 ] First things first, Hopworks makes killer beer. The IPA and the Lager are to die for. The ambiance is modern with lots of recycled materials, Great space. It is obvious that a lot of thought went into the building that used to be a fuel building from, I think the 1940s. The food is overpriced and not very interesting. It is apparent that the brewer used to work at Laurelwood because there is a lot of the same feel. Kid friendly, uniformed workers. and pizza-centric menu. The service is average at best. Most times I have been there, I have witnessed employees twiddling their thumbs and I am waiting to order. The servers are mildly knowledgeable of the product being served. The beer is of a world class caliber, but that is about it. I live a stones throw from this place, but usually opt for Roots or Green Dragon. It would be nice to see guest taps on at HUB. I also have to question some of the claims of sustainability with this place. Claims it is the only
eco brewpub in town. I think it is great that they use renewable energy resources for brewing and materials, but in my humble opinion, local ingredients are more important than certified organic ones. If you want to try perhaps the best IPA in Portland and possibly Oregon, go to HUB. It’s just not a place I would hang out at everyday. Ben Love, rules, too. | | raphael (13), Portland, Oregon | | June 28, 2008 The place ws bustling, but so many workers buzzing around attention never lagged.the key is they know how to make beer. soe creativity in the menu but nothing weird. beautiful space with quirky recycled items (string-ray bicycle seats above the urinals?) and great architecture. parking can be dicey. a definite winner overall. | | ¾ (599), Colorado | | June 12, 2008 Big building, cycling theme, shiny brushed metal everywhere. Beer selection is quite good, as is the overall quality. Steam beer, IPA, Baltic porter, Czech pils, etc. Happy hour food menu has interesting choices and reasonable prices, but I’d come back again just to try more beer. This is the startup from the former Laurelwood brewer, so it’s no surprise that the beer is well-received. | | BrewDad (239), Olympia, Washington | | May 13, 2008 [ Updated September 16, 2008 ] The atmosphere, beer, food and people working where all awesome I loved this place. They have a wonderful bar and the bikes hanging from the bar are an awesome addition. The beer was great they brew all organic beers and they where great. The food was pub faire and very tasty. Tons of parking and easy to find. A great place to take the kids for a nice lunch and a pint. This is a wonderful addition to the Portland beer scene. They have specials and special tastings’ so get on their website and sign up for the updates. I will be back for sure this place was great. |
