The Horse Brass is a place I like to go on occasion. Their drink selection is outstanding, one of the very best in all of Portland and you can count on being able to try something unique each time you stop by. However, the food isn’t much good, and I’ve had pretty good and absolutely terrible service there. Prices aren’t bad.

A landmark in S.E. Portland, Horse Brass has a Authentic Old English Pub Feel. The ambiance is spot on. The draft beer selection is supreme, It changes on an almost daily basis. I have personally witnessed on several visits 4+ cask beers tapped at a time. They have a large selection of whiskys and plenty of dart boards. The bartenders and waitstaff treat you as they should. The owner is present most days and is very friendly to talk to as well as a wealth of knowledge regarding the evolution of the American craft beer emergence since prohibition. I consider Horse Brass to be one of the greater bars I have visited.

Best place to drink in Portland in my limited experience. Great beers, and many to choose from. Decent pub atmosphere. when we were there, it seemed they could have used a few more wait staff on, as our waitress was running around madly. Beers were in top condition.

A really interesting British style pub. Lots of old wood and wrought iron with a HUGE tap list including several cask beers on tap. Didn’t sample the food, but the place was busy and the staff seemed knowledgeable. Seems like this place has a good bit of Portland beer history within its walls.

The food rating is for their fish and chips which are the best anywhere - I do not know about their other food. I really like that you can buy a micro brewed 10oz glass for only $2.25 to $2.75, since it often takes more than a sample for me to decide how much I like a beer. I do wish that they offered a taster tray with 6 to 10, 4oz glasses, but being able to get a free 1oz sample or 3, and the 10oz glasses nearly make up for that.

The classic Horse Brass, located in a beery area of Portland you’ll want to visit anyway is probably a must. The gigantic tap list just makes it worth it by itself. The beers seem to rotate swiftly, so I take it that everything is fresh. In terms of looks, it clearly adopts the English pub path and is relatively successful in terms of decorum, but not in terms of England. The crowd here is relatively young, relatively trendy and just clearly American. I can’t blame Horse Brass for that, but it does not have the warming, envelopping, yet brash and character of a pub in Britain. Efficient bar staff, but it just did not feel all that comfortable though the food aptly looked gross. Still, the selection features tons of IPAs and other American delicacies. The pint of La Folie at 4.50 felt like the deal of the century.

Well I finally made it after 10 years of loving the craft beer scene I made it to the Horse Brass Pub. I will admit a few years back I went in but the smoke was so thick I walked right back out. Now if they left the laws as they where I would have one day ventured in but I was sure glad it was not such a smoke house. Made it nice to really taste and enjoy the brew. Now enough of that off my soap box. Don Younger whom I have met over the years at various events and places has made quite the place. The taps, the bar the place itself was awesome. A beer drinker’s paradise I finally made it. The taps available alone where to die for and I was lucky to have a great beer. Beers in the bottle top notch the food was awesome and the service was also very good. They the servers had great beer knowledge of the product and for this beer geek that was awesome. If ever in Portland and have a few places to see this is one that is on the top of the list for beer bars. Horse Brass I will be back…

great bar with great rotating taps. decent service. i would have rated it higher with a greater selection but though there selection is excellent, it is not as extensive as I had expected.

The Brass used to be my favorite pub in Portland. Since the January 1, 2009 Oregon Smoking Ban went into effect the pub has completely changed. The crowd is now louder and more intent on getting drunk than enjoying a few great pints. The staff has also gone down hill, they are harder to get service from, less friendly, and know less about the beers they are pouring. The food however hasn’t changed, you can still get the best fish and chips in Portland and a scotch egg. The beer list is as great as ever, it just can’t be beat. Even though I can’t find a place to beat the beer selection I still don’t find myself going here anymore. I used to head in once a week if I could I now find myself going once every few months, and only during lunch hours.

Had to go and visit this legend of a pub. It didn’t dissapoint either. Good pub atmosphere, with plenty of choices. Will be back as soon as I’m in Portland again.
