Situated on Main Street in the bucolic town of Waterbury (1,706), the Alchemist Pub & Brewery is where much of the populace seems to spend their evening – so prepare to wait for seating. In any case, the crowd was a diverse one, all ages (the young and the old) and backgrounds (from the well to do to the neer-do-well) being represented. Located in what was once the town post office, the Alchemist is not a large and rambling establishment; upon entry, to the right is a crowded bar area; to the left, and separated by a dividing wall of hightop tables, is the dining area. Toward the back, where we waited during our 45-minute wait to be seated, is a pool table (which should really be replaced with additional seating so more people can actually eat and drink).

The must-stop place in the region, so we stopped there for dinner. Nice ambience, and good to very good beers, including two gluten-free beers that were surprisingly decent. The prices were a bit high, but nothing too bad. Overall, I found this well worth our time.

Impressive selection of beers here, all Alchemist. I won’t really say much about them since you can search beers and read more than could ever be said in one of these little comment boxes (and I suggest you do read a few). The atmosphere isn’t much but it’s quintessential small town vermont. Simple and unadorned. There’s a pool table in back, some tables and a long bar. And yes, it gets dark in there. Food’s solid and portions are large, meaning there’s no reason to eat elsewhere before you arrive (but if you do, Hen of the Wood is beyond comparison). A must try in central vermont.

I Stopped in with my family on my way back from Ben and Jerry’s. I would have stopped for lunch but they are not open (hint). The look of the place is pretty typical for a New England brew pub. A bar, few tables, a pool table and some rather interesting art on the walls. What makes up for this place is the beer and the food both were outstanding. I had the red beans and rice with andouille sausage, which seems to be a favorite among us LOL. I thought it was a great value for all the food you got. There were 7 of us and every one really enjoyed their meal. No leftovers either, which surprised me considering my teenage girls. The brews are out of this world, I kind of expected this considering Tod Mott recommended this place to me. I wasn’t disappointed in the least The waitress was surprisingly prompt and knowledgeable about the brews. When she didn’t know an answer she had no problem finding someone to get the answer for me. As for the value, seven of us ate; granted I was the only one drinking beer. I walked away leaving a 20% tip and still only spent a few dollars more than $100. I will defiantly head back to this place the next time I am in the area

This is a great pub thats worth going out of your way for. A great, but simple, menu. Cool artwork on the wall help the ambiance. Do this place and Ben & Jerries down the road

Afternoon visit to this great place. The ambiance is welcoming. the service was friendly and knowledgeable, this guy knew his beers. The food was very good for a brewpub. This is a place to go again and again.

Stopped in for a quick pint after eating at Arvad’s. Stood near the bar, where there’s a leaning area and a sideboard to put your glass down on (presumably for while you wait to be seated). Really loved the art work; great feel to the place. The menu looked good, but we’d already eaten. Beer selection was solid, and the barkeep recommended their Holy Cow IPA as the biggest hoppy beer on at the moment. It was fantastic! Definitely need to go back and spend more time there in the near future!
