I arrived in Flam early July just off its namesake railway. What a great surprise to find smack dab in the heart of the tourist center of town a brewpub! Unfortunately it was closed until just about the time that my boat was due to depart. Luckily next door was a resto that had several of their beers available on draft. Got to try some of those to my enormous enjoyment. And as luck would further have it, word got around to the brewmaster, Evan, that I was enjoying the beere and he personally stopped by my table and invited me for a little vilsit to the brewpub. Had a nice chat, a little swag, and a big smile. Maybe we’ll be able to have some of their beers in USA someday soon. I hope so! Quaffable brew.

Visiting this place during spring 2009 and must just say that I agree with Yngwie, this place has to be experienced personally to understand what is all about. The place (Flåm) is almost unbelievable beautiful and has a scenery that no photo can possibly justify. The brewpub is like something from a fairytale, filled with to many details to describe and actually really cosy at the same time, especially in the evening with the open fireplace. To be honest, no one will really expect to find really good beers at a place like this. With so much effort made to design the building with the decoration, yes even inside the brewery itself - you could hope to get decent beers at the best. They only serve their own beer (with exception of low alcohol beers) and just have to have something to suit 1 million tourists from everywhere. They do serve some kind and easy to like beer, but they are all well made beers. They show distinct what craft beer is all about without offending anyone. At the same time they have one of the best and hoppiest IPA that available in Norway. I also now that some other goodies for the hardcore beer enthusiast are just around the corner. The staff is friendly and seem to know what they are dealing with. Evan, the man himself seems to be everywhere all the time and is the friendliest and most patient person you could imagine. I really don’t know if it’s right for me to comment the food. They normally don’t serve food at the brewpub, but my visit was during a special arrangement with a multi-course beer dinner prepared by a gourmet chef, so this is not totally neutral. My only advice will be to visit Ægir whenever in Norway, no matter how far distance to travel whatsoever.

You might have seen pictures of the brewpub, but they don’t do justice to the place. It’s much, much nice than the pictures might suggest. I was lucky to visit the place in the springtime, where we had two really nice and sunny days, and what a sight! The mountains rising hundreds of meters from the fjord and the little place of Flåm, snow on the top, lots of waterfalls in the mountainsides, and the bottom of the valley green and blooming, not to forget the water on the fjord, blue, and without any signs of waves. Furukroa is a cafe and restaurant, with a big outdoor seating, as well as a hotel rooms on the first floor. In a buidling soon to open, 20 meters away, there will be another 42 hotel rooms. But the beauty in subject, Ægir Bryggeri, is situated in the middle of those two buildings. All three of them next to the water and railway, making them easy to find for the 1 million+ tourists finding it’s way to Flåm each summer. The brewery is built in a style reminiscent of a stave church, with dragon heads on the wooden roof-top, and stone-paved around the building. Inside, the first thing you see is a giant fireplace in the middle of the room, and in the back you see the bar, and then the brewery in shining copper and stainless steel. I ordered my first beer, and completely forgot to drink and use my camera, as I was sitting at my stool staring at all the details inside the bar. I was quite lucky to meet the brewer as well, and he gave me a tour of the brewery, and told me everything I wanted to know and even more. He is an American married to a Norwegian girl, and seems to have found his Paradise on earth. There’s no food served in the brewery, but the hotel breakfast I got in Furukroa was lovely.If you’re ever close to the place, you should pay a visit. No, sorry, you MUST pay a visit! (The beers are nice as well.)
