One of my favourite places in Antwerp. In a corner off a pretty square in the university area, with lots of old red brick. You can just sit in the courtyard with a beer and relax and let the cares of the world dissipate around you. The Chimay Blanche on tap is sublime.

Very nice pub if you’re in a medium-sized group. Nice beer selection. One of the few pubs in Antwerp where you can enjoy a good beer with limited background noise and not crowded.

I realized that the Waagstuk was the right place for me when I met the guy here from the Antwerp Beer College, who was having their monthly meeting in the back room. I had a great visit here, the only shortcoming being that I wasn’t asked to join their tasting in the back room. This place is not easy to find. It is quite a few turns from the central square in Antwerp, and sort of down a dead-end. It is in a little square, but appeared to be the only place in the square open on the Saturday I visited. It was quite smokey, so we sat outside in its courtyard. Atmosphere was pretty average – a small bar and a dining room outfitted in some generic wooden paneling without a lot of distinguishing decoration. Our server was excellent. He was an older gentleman, who spoke excellent English and had an encyclopedic knowledge of beer. He did a great job making recommendations for our group. Selection was quite good – a few beers on tap and a very high quality bottle list. I had a La Trappe Tripel and the best Saison Dupont I’ve ever had here. In terms of beer-geek experiences in Antwerp, this was tops for me despite the Kulminator’s superior reputation.

Visited the place on a rainy day. Apart from me 2 more guests inside plus 2 servants. The latter seemed more interested in speaking to one another than to serve. Beer selection not impressive, food in plenty but cafe like and disappointing. Maybe the place had a bad day. Nevere mind I have to rate my experience.

Thought I rated this place. A beautiful old converted carriage horse with a nice outdoor patio. Someone else picked up the bill so it made the place even better. Lifeman’s Kriek on vat was amazing. Didn’t have any food here.

Went there with Peter (oberabcbbsok) and a friend after LCRBM 2007. Thank goodness he was there, I would have gotten lost for sure. Service was really slow, especially since I wanted to go back to Kulminator for a nightcap, but the place was packed. The house brew Zeppelin was great and we enjoyed our meals, strangely served with rice rather than the ubiquitous fries. Peter explained that it’s some kind of fiscal loophole, if you serve fries you need a special permit or something, so they decided to keep costs down and serve rice instead. Another reason why I love Belgium, they have legislation over fries but you can get Beer out of a vending machine any time you want. The Beer list was pretty good, not as amazing as some of Antwerps’ well known bars, but for a restaurant type place it was fabulous. Prices are dirt cheap, so travellers on a budget who want to eat something other than Doner should take note of this place.

Went here with pat, voota and his gf jenny and pauline for diner. Good selection of belgiun ales about 70 or so avalible. I got a Mort Subite Oude Gueuze which was outstanding with some spagghti. Nice ambiance to the place. Only problems are its not too easy to find even with a map. And also there was one waiter for over 20 tables of which all wanted food.

Dropped in here for dinner and a few beers. Was quite busy, and they only had one barperson working, so service was very slow. Beer list was solid, lots of choice good prices. I ate the meatball with cherry, which was good, they also had pasta and a couple other Flemmish dishes to chose from. Worth a visit for sure.

Reasonably-sized place with interesting decorations. Almost completely empty on a Saturday evening, which made it feel a bit characterless.

The beer list is not terribly extensive, but has some special beers (like the Zeppelin by Steenberge). I wouldn’t consider this place a must.

They have food, but we weren’t tempted by the menu and went elsewhere. The service was OK.
