| j12601 (64), Poughkeepsie, New York | | November 23, 2009 Pricey. Stopped in quickly to check out their bottles and possibly pick up a sandwich for lunch. While I’m sure the food is good, it was too expensive for a quick lunch, so we skipped it. Bottle selection is good, but a bit overpriced. Left without buying anything. | edp70 (2), New York does not count - explanation | | July 28, 2009 Great selection, very knowledgeable and helpful staff (I’ve had many long conversations with them), and great food. I go there regularly. Sometimes their prices are high, but not always, and they have things other places don’t. They also do growler fills (eg they had The Bruery Melange #3, wow!). | | ManvsCity (19), Redmond, Washington | | April 21, 2009 I’ll grant the prices are not bargain basement, but Bierkraft has a huge selection of Northeast beers, an impressive display of Belgians, and some nice displays of Brooklyn reserve type bottles. The folks running the place were knowledgeable and excited about their products. While we were in the store, a gentleman asked where the Sam Adams Lager was, and was informed, they don’t carry the grocery store variety of beers because they’d just go bad sitting on the shelf. Clientele are looking for bigger beers. The growler fill up selection looks impressive, though I didn’t avail myself of it. The business is soon to have a license to serve beer on premises with their excellent deli sandwiches and cheese. Can’t wait for my next visit. | | puzzl (72), New York, New York | | February 6, 2009 Decent, but VERY expensive, behind only Spuyten Grocery. Bottle selection isn’t great. They have some good stuff in growlers, but again, really expensive, and they are extremely pushy about making you use their growlers and caps even if you bring your own stuff. They’ll charge you $2 for the god damn cap too, tell you its better than the standard cap, and then it will leak. You can tell I’ve had bad experiences here. This place pisses me off, I see little reason to return. | | JCastner (11), New York | | January 22, 2009 The bottles are a bit expensive. But other than that it’s one of NYC’s best retailers. Great, always changing selection with a knowledgeable staff make this worth the visit. | | nramsburg (15), New York, New York | | November 27, 2008 Service and selection are hallmarks of Bierkraft and, on both counts, they succeed. While prices might not always be the most competitive (though, often they are), with the exception of Whole Foods Bowery, I can’t think of another store in NYC that has the bottle and growler selection that they carry. A word about the growlers: on a few of the lines they use a system in which the beer is filtered through equipment originally designed for pool filters except where the cleaning agent (chlorine I assume) would’ve been, they use coffee beans, chocolate, chili, etc to impart flavor to the beer. Very cool.
The cured meat and cheese selection is worth checking out also, and the free Tuesday night tastings shouldn’t be missed. | millsykills (2), Brooklyn, New York does not count - explanation | | November 21, 2008 LOVE THIS PLACE! The staff know there stuff. Anytime I need any info, they have it. Also, they have some beers you cannot get anywhere else at all. Must go for NYC beer fans. R train to Union. | | rocbyter (13), Waterbury, Connecticut | | June 14, 2008 Beer and cheese? Small store but this is Brooklyn when do you expect. 12oz singles in the cooler means a lot of regular quality beer selection. The special brews were not as varied but still a respectable selection. I should have thought about trying to carry a case of beer 9 blocks on foot while I was making my selections. | | bhops (34), Dallas, Texas | | April 4, 2008 [ Updated April 19, 2008 ] Great use of tight space. Had a really interesting discussion about bottling with the owner. At least two different people from the store approached me to offer help, and both were very knowledgeable. I didn’t try any cheese or chocolate, but the owner’s wife was making cookies and the place smelled great. Would like to attend a tasting but don’t live in NYC. | | bonbright7 (35), Bellport, New York | | January 18, 2008 After reading about this, I made a point of visiting this interesting place, which is a block and a half from the Union St stop for the R-subway. Upon entering and viewing the tremendous cold selection on the left and the room temperature selections on the right, I regretted not bringing my Jeep and to few coolers to fill. There was way more than I could remember and many interesting items like St. Bernardus Wit and a Dupont Holiday Saison 750ml. The coolest growler fill of the Sixpoint Granpa’s Nerve Tonic was a counter fill that took all the guess work out of an easy task. The cheese and chocolate selection seemed to be good, but I didn’t get to it too much. The counter help and the guys handling the growlers were very friendly and were curious to know where I was from and how I had heard of them. The prices were reasonable and I will be happy to visit the place over and over again. |
