| Borresteijn (55), Amsterdam, Netherlands | | October 26, 2009 Visited on a friday evening during an 8hr stop at Sin Changi airport, a short walk to the right from metrostation Clarke’s Quay. Very large bar with multiple rooms, indeed very industrial like with steel and light wood interior, but the atmosphere was very good since the bar was packed with locals and expats. Large terrace on the riverside with a nice view. Tasted all 13 beers they had from samplers and had a good and very spicy pizza. Beers were (below) average and very English oriented. Prices were high for European standards, I paid S$36,- for the samples and S$22,- ex service charge and tax for the pizza, which is alltogether > €30 or US$45. Nevertheless a nice way to spend an evening in Singapore, and close to Archipelago brewpub (10min walk). | | nate2g (151), Brisbane, Australia | | September 25, 2009 Located on Clark Quay, it’s pleasantly situated with views of the river and surroundings. The beers range from very nice to below average, but there’s a decent range of beers to try. Food is nice with the portions generous. The staff were friendly and service was fine on my few visits. | | lgklotet (14), Singapore, Singapore | | May 13, 2009 One of the classics in Singapore I suppose. The beer is really good, the XIPA gives me the hoppy-shivers.. a rare thing in Singapore. Sure enough, the place does lack a bit in ambience and that’s unfortunately the main reason for not coming here so often, especially as their beer is availabe as take-away (mind you though, from my limited experience, their bottling line ain’t clean...).
The prices are a bit on the dear side, especially off happy-hour.
Come here for a pint by the river, eat somewhere else. | TerenceHua (8), , Singapore does not count - explanation | | February 21, 2009 [ Updated March 11, 2009 ] Minimalism is not a problem in itself. But almost bare carpentry packed side by side with an "open brewery" on site? Basically, you get the feel that you are drinking in a factory with a t.v. or two thrown in by union’s request. Trust me - they even have wire mesh fencing around the kettles and tanks adorned with security and safety signages . Unless that does something for you, it’s not good ambience. I checked the dictionary to be doubly sure what ambience means. The staff extend just about enough courtesy to ward off complaints - maybe that’s why there’s no service charge. They practically wrestle the menu away from you soonest possible and, seem in a hurry to bill you and have you on your way. Food’s good and the selection is acceptable. But, the prices are like a Zippo lighter ignited in your pants, i.e., pockets get burnt. | Dredd (6), Ormond, Australia does not count - explanation | | July 26, 2008 Great spot to escape Tiger Beer and the Singapore humidity. A lot to try about 12 on tap so to go the range is a big ask. Beer is generally of good standard, service is good and even if you are alone a good spot as there are plenty of expats to speak to and sport on TV. A bit of persuasion will get the bartenders giving you free samplers and the food is OK, but expensive for Singapore. | | tomciccateri (36), Albuquerque, New Mexico | | August 11, 2007 Easily reachable via subway (Clarke Quay stop) and a walk across the pedestrian bridge over the Singapore River. Large outdoor seating area along the Riverside, with a retractable awning. Pooltable and extensive seating inside, plus good size bar with view into adjacent brewhouse and vessels. Lots of house beers with a great tasting area. | | fiulijn (198), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy | | June 26, 2007 [ Updated October 31, 2007 ] August 2006. Maybe most of their beers don’t rock, but at least there is always a large selection, maybe 10 beers at a time. Some of the beers are also available to take away, at least grab the X-tra. The bar is in a nice location on the river quay, expect to see more ang-moh than local people... Undoubtly the first place to visit, in Singapore. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. October 2007. I’m less excited by this place I had 4 beers recently that really sucked. For beers I would rather go to Archipelago (for spicy original beers) or The Pump Room (for solid straight brews). | | highlandlad (37), Sydney, Australia | | September 24, 2006 Great location and a great beer range make this a must for visitors to Singapore. Especially if you’re sick of the sight of Tiger Beer. This brewpub is housed in a modern complex that sprawls along the river in the city centre. With its outdoor seating it’s a bit reminiscent of Sydney’s Darling Harbour (James Squire Brewhouse) or Melbourne’s Southgate. The air-conditioned interior is pleasant, if a bit gloomy, with plenty of TV screens, a pool table and dartboards. The beer selection is first rate. There were 12 available on the day I visited, although the Moh Gwai Belgian Strong was only available for take-away for some reason. The beers vary from odd to excellent. Five are bottled and available for take-away. The bar offers two sample trays which are fair value at S$10.50 for five/six 60ml samples. Service is as polite and wonderfully efficient as always in Singapore. The food menu is a US-style mix of burgers, pizzas and ribs. Seemed to be popular but why would you eat that when you could be sitting in a hawker market eating the fantastic local cuisine for a fraction of the price? BTW, if you baulk at the beer prices, bear in mind that bars at nearby Boat Quay charge almost S$15 for a pint of Guinness. Beer is expensive in Singapore. Bummer. | | TBone (123), Pori, Finland | | February 26, 2006 11 own beers, carefully selected small Belgian/Canadian beer list (Duval, Unibroues, Chimay, Maredsous etc.). A bit upscale, but service is excellent and food too. You can sample all their 11 beers by 2 oz glasses. Outstanding brew pub and one of my favourite stops in Singapore. | | Sully (14), Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia | | November 20, 2005 This is a beer drinker’s oasis in a desert of Asian standard lagers. The selection of beers is an everchaning one with the staples well represented. They now have the XIPA and Moh Gwai on tap which is a very pleasing thing. Along wth the stout this is a great variety. I cannot comment about the food as I have never eaten here. Singapore is such a great place for food you don’t want to waste your money on typical Amrican style fare. Mind you the predominantly expat clientele seem to lap it up so it must be OK hence my rating anyway. The real probelm here is that for a sportsbar you never see any cricket on the screens. Oh well, have another beer to drown the disappointment. |
