| MrChopin (19), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | August 28, 2009 Stopped in for the Pucker Up sour fest. Dark wood and maroon, dimly lit. About 15-20 taps, a comprehensive selection, and definitely as cheap of prices as I’ve seen in Philly bars (well-priced tasters are great for the longer sessions). Bottle selection not up to some Philly standards, but still respectable. Friendly service, though a little indifferent. Loud, slightly upscale vibe, but the quality beer more than compensates, and top notch location with Sarcone’s only a couple of blocks away. Will definitely go back next time I’m in Philly. | | afireinside96 (29), Mountville, Pennsylvania | | August 2, 2009 Visited here during my Philly bar tour. It was kind of early in the day and the place was nearly empty. Staff was quick and friendly. I loved the decor of the place, exposed brick, lots of natural light, and dark wood for the bar and tables. Very clean as well. All of their taps seemed to be of a different style and prices were decent for the area. This place definitely deserves repeat visits. | Hogman13 (7), Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | August 1, 2009 One of my favorite places for beer in the city. Friendly, knowledgeable bartenders and a very nice selection of draft and bottles. For being in the city the prices aren’t outrageous and happy hour makes it hurt less. The food isn’t great but it’s good enough to get something to nibble on while drinking some big beers. | YelloKitty (1), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania does not count - explanation | | July 2, 2009 I love this place! First of all, they have the greatest happy hour in Philadelphia. No joke. All taps are half off. We’re talking Belgians, new hyped beers out of Cali, Germans, and the latest local offerings too. They’re regular prices are already very good (due to being in South Philly instead of CC maybe?), but then half pricing them?! It’s nuts.
It’s got a great atmosphere too, what with the fireplace running in the winter and the nice bar tables across from plasmas, which are not at all intrusive.
The only so-so thing is the food. Now, it’s come a LONG way, and there are some dishes I really like a lot, but overall, it could be better. But you really can’t beat it for price:selection ratio anywhere.
Plus, it’s pretty close to my house. | | HereForTheBeer (12), Brattleboro, Vermont | | January 17, 2009 In our recent crawl around South Philadelphia we made a stop at the Devils Den. We had never been inside before and were quite shocked at the atmosphere once we stepped inside. It was not at all what we expected. More like a chain restaurant than a "den" of any kind. Exposed brick, wood fireplace roaring, few TVs and a primarily khaki and collared shirt crowd.
We settled in and took a look at the beer menu, which was mighty impressive. Large bottle selection and about 20 taps. Prices were reasonable and the happy hour specials were good.
The food left something to be desired. A notch above pub fare but rather pricey for the quality and didn’t really fit the atmosphere the way that the beer list did. Perhaps it was an off night (it was a weekday evening, and fairly slow).
Overall, it was a comfortable place to get out of the cold and try some decent beers. We will certainly give it another shot and hope for the best with the food - if they tweak that aspect a bit, this place could be |
