| ajm (161), Los Angeles, California | | November 23, 2009 That I have not rated this is not only foolish but irresponsible. This place is a landmark even if you don’t live in Chicago, or Illinois, OR EVEN the Midwest. Great wood trim, great bartenders, great events, and always something worth the trip on tap, be it a special imperial, a barrel-aged, or just a limited hoppy ale. I love this place for its longevity, its tenacity and its status. I always feel welcome in here, even if I am toting multiple luggage pieces. This is my first time in Chicago without visiting, and let me say I am jonesing. Here’s to another 21 years. | thomson1 (4), Illinois does not count - explanation | | November 4, 2009 Best brewpub in Chicago, great music, all the Goose staples plus some special suprises! | | hombrepalo (44), Chicago, Illinois | | October 13, 2009 Finally went to GI CLY. Shocked it took me so long to check this place out, really don’t have a reason why I hadn’t been here. Place is nice, clean with a sofisticated look, not a college looking bar, more like a reasurant. Menues on recycled paper. Service was good, nothing out of the ordinary. Selection was wide (lots of variety in styles) but didn’t have anything that jumped out at me (like NightStalker or Juliet on Tap). Food was good but not great (fries did suck). Ambience that day was very layed back, nothing too loud on a Monday night (I’m guessing my tabe was the loudest that day). Overall a nice experience. | | megrut (15), Chicago, Illinois | | October 7, 2009 I love this place. They’ve always had solid beers, but the new chef has made the food just as good. I highly recommend the Thursday night "Recycled" Pig Roast. (Pigs come from a local farmer who uses Goose Island’s spent grain to feed his hogs.) Also, the Nightstalker imperial stout is not to be missed. Multiple cask options and smoked, fresh pork - what more could you ask for? | | JoeMcPhee (262), Jackson Heights, New York | | September 19, 2009 Nice looking pub with lots of dark wood and some cool retro-ish light fixtures. Our server was very friendly and made an effort to keep us happy (especially considering we unknowingly showed up 45 minutes before closing). Great selection... only a single beer that was poor, and several that were really incredible. Fairly inexpensive as well. Good atmosphere and a pretty chill vibe. I enjoyed this place immensely. Wish I’d been able to stay here longer. | | PilsnerPeter (95), Flushing, New York | | August 25, 2009 Enjoyed the sampler here. Friendly helpful service. The selection is pretty eclectic and the beers are a solid average. The ambiance is nice with wooden decor and a warm environment. The music was awesome- they were playing chill Indie rock bands and it was at an acceptable volume. I was there on a Friday night and the crowd was not bad at all. Got a seat at a table and all. A nice brewpub. | | MoDog (22), Griffith, Indiana | | August 21, 2009 Always worth a stop, this brewpub always has a nice selection on tap (usually around 12-14 beers). Lots of stuff that blows away their regular bottled lineup...but the high gravity stuff can be pricey. Also, they usually have one or two guest taps. The food is nice. The small plates are reasonably priced and tasty. Good burgers. The staff at the bar is awesome. Quick, knowledgable, and willing to offer free samples. I prefer to stop in during lunch for a more laid back atmosphere. | | drowland (42), Tallahassee, Florida | | August 15, 2009 I’ve been to this place a few times and absolutely love it. I’m really glad they got their lease again! The ambiance is normal bar, but the tour is usually run by the brewer himself and is a lot of fun. The service has always been excellent - plenty of bartenders, waitresses, and hostesses to go around. The selection is mainly limited to their beers, but a vast selection usually. The food I’ve had there has always been amazing, widely varied, unique, and innovative. The value is average - somewhat pricey for bar food, but you’re paying for the above mentioned goodness. Overall, this is a great place to visit. One time when I went there John Hall (creator, CEO, former brewer) was there eating and was more than willing to hang out and talk to us. I had already talked to him because I got my Masters from his undergrad, but hey - anytime he’s around, I’m glad to chat! | | BeerBelcher (130), Columbus, Ohio | | August 12, 2009 I looked hard at this place for a tie to Anheuser-Busch (InBev) that would ruin it for me, but other than a guest-tap with Redhook, I couldn’t find a thing. In fact, this is one of the best beer bars I’ve been to. When you walk into a place and you see they have 4 beer engines - you get the feeling you’ve come to the right place. Toss on beers like Night Stalker, Matilda, Pere Jacques, (and many others including guest taps) and a location across from Sam’s liquors and this place is tough to beat.
The only real downfall is that this place offers a limited menu and is pretty pricey. We had 4 beers and an order of wings...which somehow added up to $56.
Decor is nice, server was knowledgeable although a little slow/inattentive. | | Fatumsch (15), | | July 23, 2009 If you’re in Chicago and you love craft beer, you’ve got to make the journey to this brewpub. |
