xnoxhatex (9), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan does not count - explanation | | August 24, 2009 What a wonderful place the hopcat is, not only do they have amazing beers on tap as well as food. They also have some of the most knowledgeable, friendly servers around. This place rivals some of the best beer bars out there and their food selection might even put them over the top. A great deal and a wonderful time every night of the week. I am glad to call this place home multiple nights of the week. | | 17thfloor (14), Chicago, Illinois | | August 24, 2009 Had a fantastic time here, stopped in for 1 beer and some wings and ended up staying for 4+ hours. Love the fact that the bar is a mile long allowing plenty of room for everyone to pull on up. Separate up-stairs smoking lounge was a plus to aid my bourbon barrel aged pour. Staff knows what they are doing with management on site ready to fix any problem. Prices for regular pours were $4-6 and sandwiches (which are pretty amazing) $7-9 or so. Proper glassware of course. The super high ceilings make it a very open atmosphere. They are way higher than most high ceiling which helps cut down the chatter a bit. | | Sammy (275), Toronto, Ontario | | August 6, 2009 This place rocks. It is very buzy, and the many small bar tables are conducive to relaxing and trying many beers. Glasses are hand washed, so the aroma is appreciated of the beers. Six new beers out of seventy something taps were changing on the fly! To talk to the brewer (there are 4 or more taps for their own) and get continued service, best to come well after the lunch crowd. Speedy service, despite not having many staff. Was here with one of the owners of Founders, otherwise I found it only average friendliness from other patrons. Founders was better in that regard. With this bar, and Founders down the street, its a wicked double play for Grand Rapids. | Firkinpoe (2), Huber Heights, Ohio does not count - explanation | | August 3, 2009 This was probably the best beer bar I have ever been to. I stopped in on a trip to Grand Rapids and loved the place.
The place was really cool with a great looking bar, wood floors, and a upstairs smoking lounge. The first floor is smoke-free.
The tap selection was amazing. They do specialize in Michigan breweries, but they did have a lot of good other stuff.
I tried a New Holland Imperial Hatter and then a Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti, an absolutely perfect Imperial Stout.
The service seemed a little slow for the amount of people that were there, barely any, but overall the burger and fries I had were good, and the beer was awesome. | | markwise (57), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida | | July 26, 2009 This tap list is freaking awesome! There is nothing quite like it. CRAZY beers on draft, growlers available, but a bit pricey. Service was pretty good, but the place was empty. One of the brewers stopped by and chatted, recommended Sage Against The Machine, which was enjoyable. Bartender knew his beers very well, and an overall great experience ensued. | inkubus27 (7), Highland, Indiana does not count - explanation | | July 10, 2009 Went to Founders then headed a few blocks down to Hopat... which is every bit as good as Founders, though with a much larger selection of beers. It seemed like most of the beers were from Michigan breweries with a few exceptions. Overall, the list was amazing. Service was superb. Didn’t try the food but the menu looked pretty good. It’s a must stop if you’re in the area. | | timsilvia32 (37), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina | | June 28, 2009 I remember this place being the Sierra Room, a wine joint. What an improvement this place has become. Too bad this wasn’t around when I actually lived near GR.
Nice woody interior, like many downtown GR bars. Place for a band near the entrance windows. Porch outside is nice, for 4 months of the year. Upstairs smoking lounge is a real nice touch and does seem to keep the smoke out of the rest of the establishment.
Definetely have not seen a better beer selection, a few maybe equal, but none better. Good selection and variety and plenty of local brews. Shorts being the treat for me. The Hopcat brand stout was not bad either, just not quite as good as the Chocolate Wheat from Shorts. Vintage stuff seemed a bit pricey, but I’ve never understood the "cost" of keeping something in a cellar. Anyways, this is far and away the best place to stop in GR. | | BeerBaron617 (20), Novi, Michigan | | June 28, 2009 This place was epic. I was in the GR area for my birthday weekend and a friend told me about this place. The food was great, the beer was great, the service was excellent. I will definitely be back. Cheers! | | BeerBunker (12), Burbank, Illinois | | June 24, 2009 Stopped here after Founders Fest. The place was pretty packed, but it wasn’t too loud or douchey. Service was very good, and the waiter was very attentive. The tap selection was very good, with tons of Michigan taps. The beer wasn’t as expensive as I was lead to believe. Snagged several growlers for the hotel room, which were priced pretty fairly. The food was nothing spectacular, just your typical bar food. Worth a stop if you are in the area, but eat somewhere else. | | punkrkr27 (22), Berkley, Michigan | | June 16, 2009 Excellent selection on the taps. Bottle list is good too but a little expensive. Nice all wood interior with a small outdoor patio gives the place a nice inviting atmosphere. Wait staff was fast. Best of all, they will allow you to take home growlers on most anything on tap. This is definitely one of the better beer bars in the state. |
