Ron (3), Rochester, New York does not count - explanation | | October 27, 2009 I found the place easy enough, but finding a place to park was harder. Inside the chain link fence was filled with kegs. I parked in front of the stores next door. There is now a pretty young women pouring the free beer samples. After the long trip from the Hilton on the other side of the Island I asked to use the rest room and was told there was none for the public. I quickly downed my 5 short drafts(She wanted to use the same plastic cup for all samples) I was quickly making my beer selection to buy when she saw my discomfort and asked a worker there if I could use the worker’s men’s room. To my relief it was only 20 feet away. I felt so good I also bought a T shirt there too. | | Derek881 (26), Frederick, Maryland | | July 3, 2007 Finally found a place to park and stopped in at this little, industrial brewery, not sure what to expect. We went into a warehouse and into a little gift shop/tasting room (there aren’t even chairs). The aforementioned "grandma" was very pleasant and friendly, and everyone in my group got a small (perhaps 2-3oz) sample of each beer (although they were out of one kind). I was able to buy a case with one of each beer for a reasonable price. Overall, it was not an exciting place, but the friendly people and free samples were nice. | | Aubrey (68), Denver, Colorado | | January 11, 2006 This place is in an industrial/business district area, but it’s not far from downtown (nothing is, really). Saw the building but still drove by because I didn’t know where to park (parking is inside the chain link fence). Walked through the warehouse door and saw the tasting room on the left, through a sliding glass door (basically, the corner section you see in the photo). A "grandma" happily poured some samples for us (4 or 5 as I recall) and gave us a little rundown on each of them. The beer seemed to taste a little better than the bottled versions (of a couple of them) I’d had on the mainland. Still, nothing exceptional, and no "big" beers. On the way out I passed by an employee (brewer?) that shot me a very genuine and kind smile. Went a long way in my book. | | Braudog (478), Dayton, Ohio | | June 26, 2005 This is a little mom-n-pop place in a weird spot in Hilo. I enjoyed the old grandma at the tasting room and the beers were pretty good and they had some cool collectibles. Visit! | | ElGaucho (146), Minneapolis, Minnesota | | February 24, 2005 Outside from a guy who came in desperate to score tickets to the upcoming Kona Brewers Festival, my Dad and I were the only visitors in the brewery when we got there on a Wednesday around 1pm. The brewery is small. We asked for a tour, which is advertised on their website as beeing offered throughout the day, but the lady said they weren’t offering them. There were four beers on tap that were free for the tasting, including their new Humpback Blue, which is replacing "Mehana Beer". I also learned that Mehana’s highest rated brew, Tsunami Lager is now called "Hawaiian Lager" because of a dispute from Pelican Brewing and their Tsunami Stout. The small tasting room is located inside a sliding glass door and also contains various souvenir items. Their merchandise is some of the most reasonably priced goods of any kind I have found on the Big Island. I took home a set of coasters, a refrigerator magnet and a bottle of their soon to be defunct Mehana Beer. Worth a visit if you are in town, but not necessarily worth driving all the way here from Kona or the Kohala Coast. That being said, Hilo itself is worth the drive with its several spectacular waterfalls and banyon trees, so if you come to town, check out Mehana. |
