Easy to find location off of 1st Ave N with parking on street. Clean older building with patio in front. The bar is in the front center with food seating next to and in the back. Brewing operations on the left. The bartender, Lisa, was very freindly and had good knowledge of brews. 9 beer sampler set due to special brew for the Harley convention. Good range and quality of brews. The brewmaster, Travis, stopped and we discussed the beers and his hopes for the future. Good pub food menu and the small pizza was well prepared. Nice setting with decent food. lower lighting, had a few of the "go-to" beers that cater to the general public and they were nice. very light bodied beers i founds a little dissapointing. However, the cidre beer was a bit differnet as the anniversary ale which is cask conditioned in JD casks was quite nice. The MBC has some very good beers on tap, all of which they brew in house. I tried the Nitro-Pale (highly recommend) the Strong Ale (also highly recommend) and the Amber (not so high on this one).
The bar staff are great, they have character and attitude. The Bar Manager (Mark Hastings) and Brewer (Sheldon) are both veteran brewers, so brewing has precendence over accounting. Montana has alcohol limits on brewed beer, but MBC brews right to the limit.
The food here has always been decent upscale pub fare--you can get pizza from the wood fired oven, pastas, killer nachos, and a variety of other $7-$13 dishes.
On the weekend, MBC is dominated by the 20-30 something crowd, so if you don't like cigarette smoke, try a quieter time. The front of the place (the bar area) is tiled and there's a glass front looking on the street, so it's VERY loud during busy times, but the MBC is perhaps the best place for that demographic to meet other people of the same age group in Billings. |
