| Braudog (476), Dayton, Ohio | | November 8, 2009 November 2009 -- I’ve wanted to come here for a long time, and I was disappointed. Crowded and noisy, but not in a good way. The service was efficient, but kinda snotty, quite frankly. The food was OK, but kind of rushed -- which is the adjective I’d use for the whole experience -- rushed. What killed it, though, was the waitress who told us the weizenbock was "a mix of the wiz-en (her pronounciation) and the dunkel". Um ... not. Top it off with exorbitant prices, and I don’t think I’ll go back ... Dear Herr Hofbrauhaus Deutschland -- your reputation is being squandered. | | Ryan82SM (26), Louisville, Kentucky | | October 11, 2009 In short: Mostly style, little substance. This place looks and sounds the part (live accordian music, etc.) but fails in what should be its primary concern: a great variety of quality German beer and knowledgeable staff. My waiter nor THE BARTENDER could tell me anything about one of their top beers (Altmunchner Dunkelgold) and said I would have to talk to the brew master, who wasn’t even there. Convenient. The main hall of the place is a smoking area, which sucks for families or individuals who want to breathe. The beers I tried were above average, but that’s about it, and they only had SIX different beers in the whole joint. The biker bar down the street has more! The food was a positive, and featured huge portions at a good price. I will also say the beer is priced well, but the lack of selection is deplorable. A big disappointment for me. | | Capa (80), Yokosuka, Japan | | October 5, 2009 Phenomenal food, great beer, and an amazing atmosphere make this a great place to down a few beers in Northern Kentucky. The german music and beer garden are a great meeting place for some socializing. The food is good enough to bring me back even if they didn’t serve beer. But, the beer is good, and served in massive quantities. The variety may not be like a top-notch craft beer bar, but that isn’t the reason to come here. A real fun place to drink some beers with friends. | | drowland (42), Tallahassee, Florida | | September 5, 2009 Visited while at ITEC 2008 with a whole tuba studio - we pretty much demolished the place.
The ambiance is nice. Lots of German junk all over the walls, dressed up waitresses, big outdoor Biergarten... what I didn’t like was the huge amount of bros and bras around polo shirting up the place and chatting about which girl to date rape.<p.
Our service was pretty good. We had a rather large group and our one waitress took great care of us while eating. We then moved outside to the garten and went nuts, and all the servers there were quick and gracious.
The selection is just their beers - which is nice, and most of them are decent. And you can get them in real liter mugs, baby!
The food was pretty awesome German fare, which I love. We had a large group, so everyone got something different and we passed the plates around - it was all pretty damn good.
The value is average for the type of place - about what you’d expect. They don’t rip you off, but go in expecting to drop a few bucks...
Overall, this was a fun place to waste several hours while around the area. Our whole studio was very glad to go there and drink liter after liter of beer and eats tons of sausages and potato pancakes! | | phaleslu (87), Cincinnati, Ohio | | July 1, 2009 A lot of fun, with just a notch off Ambience because it loses some authenticity, as a relatively new place in Newport, Kentucky. I tend to like HB beers a lot more than most other big German brewers’ stuff, and you gotta love the huge glasses. It’s all brewed in house, so extremely fresh. The food is excellent traditional German fare at a fair price. The place gets packed but is a good time inside the beer hall and outside on the gravel patio. | | AndyReynolds (17), Wilder, Kentucky | | June 16, 2009 This place is really great. The service is usually good and the beer is awesome, as long as you like German style beer. Typically live polka going on in the main hall. The food is great even if you don’t like German food. They also have a giant beergarden. My only issue with this place is the fact that it gets packed on the weekends. | rudyed (7), Michigan does not count - explanation | | May 3, 2009 Fun place to go...I have been to the real deal in Munich twice, so my standards are probably way out of whack. That said, I had a great time and the helles and the dunkel were as good as i experienced in Germany. Was a bit taken aback by the guy playing Jimmy Buffett music in a german beer hall. | | FunkyBrewster (12), Chicago, Illinois | | February 3, 2009 I’ve been here several times over the years. First off, this is a much better place in the summer or warmer months as there is a lot more room and some great fence leaning views of downtown Cincinnati. The ambiance is typically a huge draw. Last time I was here everyone was singing and dancing and standing tables/benches. Exactly what you would expect from a German style bier haus. Come early if you want to find a seat though (we sat at the corner of the bar). During the winter everyone is relegated to the inside or a small heated tent area just outside. Service is okay, nothing great but since it was so packed I wasn’t too upset. They moved as fast as they could at the bar and seemed mostly friendly. Selection is good, typical German food and they seemed to always have four or five beers on tap. Some don’t like this but you can’t expect a bigger tap with other breweries beers. Just enjoy the fresh beer they have on tap and always try the monthly rotating seasonals! Not very cheap but compared to | dubiousfrog (6), Bloomington, Indiana does not count - explanation | | October 6, 2008 Don’t expect a great beer selection at this place, just great beer. They do what they are good at, brewing not german style beer, but real German Beer, using German equipment, malt, hops and yeast along with German expertiese, including regular visits from the head brewer in Munich to make sure all is right.
The selection isn’t more than 4 or 5 beers because they don’t brew any more than that, and as the brewery own the bar, common practice in Europe, they dont see any value in selling competitors beers. . . . would you?
In short, cracking beer, food and ambience and the most authentic German Beer i have tasted in the USA. Unmissable.
There seem to be quite a few mixed reviews on this site, mainly concerning noise and the beer selection. | | CaptBier (19), Birmingham, Alabama | | May 1, 2008 By the time we got here I think I was tired of looking at beer let alone trying it, no wait, what am I saying. I love beer. Beer is good, and stuff. Food was great traditional german fare. Service was good, but selection was below poor. I think there were three to choose from and the place was empty. This place would probably be great when packed out or for Oktoberfest. |
