7/8/2008 3:51:54 PM, tuesday, july 08, 2008 Visited for a quick lunch and a drink on a Sunday afternoon, and like others have said, the interior is much more spacious than the Mountain Sun pub in downtown Boulder. Selection was pretty good, 12-14 taps but probably 8-10 were things that I found at the other pub 3 years ago! Maybe just (un)lucky or maybe an indication that they’re a little stagnant. Regardless, I enjoy my visit, tried a new IPA, and was treated well sitting at the bar. A quick bite and a drink was fairly inexpensive. I don’t really dig the stripmall atmosphere where the building is located, but inside it’s comfortable and pleasant.

2/19/2008 9:57:29 PM, tuesday, february 19, 2008 This is a lot more open and roomy than Pearl Street and has seemingly the same number of taps even though the selection is not the same (be warned now if you visit for Stout Month). Otherwise, same Mountain Sun food and spacey service from waiters/waitresses more in tune with what other co-workers are doing than servicing customers.

2/7/2007 5:24:52 PM, wednesday, february 07, 2007 I enjoyed the food, the service and the selection of beers here. However, I was not overly impressed with the quality of the beers I tried. They were good, but that is where it ended, none of the ones I tried did I find myself wanting another pint.

12/12/2006 11:34:36 PM, tuesday, december 12, 2006 [ Updated saturday, december 16, 2006 ] The trip that almost didn’t happen. Planned my Monday around coming here and guess what, they were closed for their X-Mas get together. So I came at 11:30 the next day and guess what, they decided to open at 4pm due to their X-Mas party. All this after calling and not getting anything other than their normal business hours on their answering machine. I’ve skipped places for worst than this! Just had appetizers. I was floored by the amount of their beers on tap. The chalk board listed 18 beers and the waitress told me to look at the taps as they had more than that!

The beer selection is really great they had about 2 porters, 2 stouts and 2 IPAs plus a at least 5 or 6 other beers and 3 guest beers pouring. The food is decent but the selection sucks if your not a vegeterian/health food nut. Overall it’s a good place for beer but the food does’nt impress me.

8/31/2005 12:49:56 PM, wednesday, august 31, 2005 Great service and beer, mixed with okay pub grub and a perfect view of the Flatirons set SoSun apart from the rest of Boulder. Once you see the third different weather pattern blow through after only your second beer, you won’t even notice that you are a few meters away from strip mall heaven. Try any of the beers, they were all tasty.

Comments Walking from the strip-mall parking lot, past the patio overlooking a vast sea of concrete, you enter a noisy place full of young faces, beer, and pub chow. The bartenders are also the dishwashers and cooks, and the dishwashers are also cooks and bartenders. This egalitarian reverence for capable multi-taskers lends the entire establishment a proletarian feel, which is reinforced by the decor, exposed pale wood festooned with stickers of political and chemical persuasions. Southern Sun has a wide and ever-changing beer list, including three or four beers on nitrogen taps. I first sampled the Colorado Kind Ale, an aforementioned nitrogen-tapped beer. I discovered a pale ale with excellent, balanced flavor and just the slightest carbonation. The head was absolutely to die for, fragrant and creamy in all the good ways. My companion sampled a Belgian Lambic of some seasonal variety, and it was true to the style... fruity and sweet, almost more like sherry than beer. We shared an Arctic Wheat, which was by far our most pedestrian sampling we were not impressed by a beer whose color (bright orange) suggested more flavor than it delivered (bud light). We finished off the evening with a Pearl Street Porter, an eminently drinkable porter with mellow malt characteristics and very thing head. To slow the beer’s journey to our heads, we sampled some of the pub fare. The S.O.B. Burger I had was fantastic, crusty with seasoning yet pink in the middle, and the chile paste contributed the perfect amount of heat. My companion had the vegetarian burrito, and it looked so good that when I visit Southern Sun for the next time, which will be very soon, I shall be sampling it. Despite the unappealing surroundings and questionable location, the Southern Sun delivers good food and an outstanding beer selection. Highly recommended.
