53 reviews for Capitol City Brewing -- Capitol Hill
| barleyPops (58), Quad-Cities, Illinois | | October 14, 2009 stopped here on a Thursday evening and this place was packed! the food was good and the beer was just OK. it’s in a great location next to Union Station, but this place had the feel of the trendy, snobby bar where locals go to rub elbows and be seen. | | Pivoyager (36), Gaithersburg, Maryland | | September 25, 2009 Located in the Old Post Office Building, which also houses the Smithsonian Postal Museum, the Capitol City is one of three locations in the DC area - the others are downtown and Arlington (VA). It is opposite Union Station, so it makes for a good beer stop when sightseeing.
This is an enormous room centered around a very large bar area, all of which sits beneath the brewing tanks.
The styles pretty much run the gamut and while not overwhelming are fresh and well made. Capitol City does offer reat Happy Hour on weekdays. | | Travlr (41), Washington, Washington DC | | July 25, 2009 Great space, old bank next to the post office, vault is still there. Huge bar, lots of tables upper and lower levels. Rotating selection of brews, most are pretty good. Decent food, nothing special. | | Strykzone (40), Wood River, Illinois | | July 6, 2009 Stopped in the day before the 4th of July. A nice trendy establishment not far from the Mall. Food was good, I had a Cubana which is a turkey, ham pickle kind of sandwich. Beer was tasty as well. I had an organic wit and a Prohibition Porter. Had hoped to get some growlers but was told they are not allowed in DC. Had to drive to their Arlington, VA location. Only downside here was the music system was ineffective. Prices were not nearly as high as feared and were about average for brewpubs in general. Except for the sound system I enjoyed my stop at this brewpub. | | gws57 (86), Saint Charles, Illinois | | June 28, 2009 Visited for lunch on a sunny Saturday in June. Server was friendly, not the most attentive, but knowledgeable. The beers were all very good or better, and 9 on draught. The food (I had a blackened catfish sandwich with bacon!) was outstanding. With a location right across the street from Union Station, I would recommend this to anyone and am looking forward to going back. | | SamGamgee (86), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California | | April 27, 2009 Situated in an impressive building next to union station, with high ceilings and huge serving tanks in the center of the oval shaped bar. The same core beers as the downtown location, but with a couple different seasonal offerings. Of the two locations in the city, the vibe is just better here, but besides that, they are pretty much the same. As a bonus though, they have a second happy hour for late-night during the week. I did score two-dollar pints of inaugurale here after the inauguration, which was a nice touch, though the beer wasn’t anything to write home about. If you are visiting the capitol of coming through the train station, I would definitely recommend stopping in. | | OSLO (80), Perth, Australia | | March 28, 2009 Went here on a saturday afternoon, and it was surprisingly quiet. There was nobody else at the bar, and the dining area was fairly sparsely populated as well. The staff were friendly, but I’m not sure how much they knew about beer, as I only spoke about it briefly with them. The ambiance was good, as it is in an impressive venue, and quite nicely done inside. The price was reasonable and although I didn’t try the food, it looked decent. I will probably stop by again at some point. | | ben4321 (42), Rockville, Maryland | | March 7, 2009 [ Updated March 9, 2009 ] I enjoyed this one a lot, 9 beers on tap on my visit. The standard 4 plus 5 rotation beers. They put the game I wanted on the big screen, gave me a very nice 9 beer sampler for a solid price. Service was great. I will be back. | | gsmitty80 (40), Washington DC | | November 20, 2008 Stopped in while i was walking to the metro station. Had a bowl of chili and their presidential election seasonal. The building was an old post office with high scaffolded second floor and lots of open space. The bartender was attentive, although un knowlegable about their brewing process. The prices for food was outrageous and the beer itself was watery and not very good. Novelty brewpub with no real distribution or product. | rm0312 (3), Idaho does not count - explanation | | October 27, 2008 I’d heard about this from a friend when he found out we would be vacationing in DC in the summer of 2008. We sat outside, as it was a very comfortable evening with unusually low humidity and fair heat. The pub was fairly busy so the service was not very fast but that was understandable. I had one of their stouts while my wife had their sampler tray, which I gladly helped her out with. The food was decent but we’d really just gone for the novelty (I’d never been to DC before). I’d go again if in the neighborhood but wouldn’t take a special trip. |
